Shift Boot Too Short?

So awhile back I put in my Comptech SS and Skunk2 knob, and ever since I've had the unfortunate side-effect of popping the plastic housing around the bottom of the boot out of place every time my shifting gets agressive. I can imagine that the problem is simple: my boot is too short for the fitment of the knob (as I had to do some minor surgery to the top ring to get the knob to sit correctly). The question is has anyone else come across this problem and have they fixed it, or should I just suck up the $30 and buy myself a new boot?

Thanks.

Buy the Auger boot. Looks a million times better than stock boot.

The Auger boot has been in the corner of my eye for awhile, now. After the Holiday I may need to bite down and just order one.
