My first oil change without changing the oil filter

Hi,

I went to the dealership today to do my first oil change, I had 7000km with 15% oil life, I dropped the car in and after one hour or so, I go pick it up and the mechanic guy said that it is not necessary to change the oil filter, so they have only changed the oil, WTF??? Is that possible? They told me the ECU indicated that changing the oil filter is not necessary.

Is that really possible?

not to contradict what a technician is telling you but I have never heard of that before. The main reason to do oil changes is to service the filter. THere are plenty of kinds of oil that can stand up to 15,000 miles of use. however I have never heard of an oil filter that can do the same. I would say check with either the service manager or anther dealership.

Not sure if Honda dealers are the same but ALL first services for ALL Acura's are considered warranty oil changes which are paid for by Acura.

We do not change the filter on the first service.

I'm not saying I agree with it and when my car went in for it's first service I changed my filter reguardless of what Honda says.

I did a little research on this and discovered that the main reason behind not changing the filter is not because Honda is cheaping out but because they are trying to be as "GREEN" as possible.

It's just one small thing they are doing for the environment by reducing waste.

These filters have been tried tested and proven to last through to your second oil change.

Rumor has it that all "A" and "A1" services will not get a filter change.

Something tells me you're right. It is what, ~$31.00 for an oil change. $10 for the filter + washer. $10 for the oil. $14 in profit? I just don't think that sounds right.

All the more reason to do it yourself. :)

Regardless of what anyone says, changing the filter is super important.

The oil might still have some life but filters do not have an extended life regardless of what the box states sometimes.

The dealer took a shortcut, in my view.

In the definative engine oil thread, it was clear that Mobile 1 Synthetic could safely withstand 15000 miles without a change. The filter however should be changed at the halfway point (7500).

first oil change , the filter has cought alot of metal shavings from the breake in of the engine, it should be changed, besides if you wait till the minder tell you its time for your oil change again, that same filter will be in the car for a loooooong time, dosent seem good for the car, i woud make them change them and if they wont then i rather go to jiffy lube and get what i want and paid for,( i hope)

Actually, I was just flipping through my owner's manual and A services do not include a filter change. Just some food for thought.

It doesn't say change "oil and filter" on the A service.

Chances are good if the dealer is charging you for a filter they are changing it.Might be a good question the next time your at your dealer for an oil change.

I just had my first oil change , the indicator showed A1
The dealer did a oil and filter change , tire rotation and courtesy check
I supplied Synthetic 5w30 oil for them to use.

someone said it best on here when they said not changing your filter is like taking a shower and then putting your dirty clothes on again

Hmph? I don't understand your reply... I originally said they do not include a filter change.

B is supposed to include the filter change.

A=Replace engine oil
B=Replace engine oil and filter.

Pretty simple no?

And when have I said anything to contradict that statement?

You replied to my original post with, "It doesn't say change "oil and filter" on the A service."

When I said, "Actually, I was just flipping through my owner's manual and A services do not include a filter change."

I guess you still don't understand.

I was agreeing with you originally but I guess you missed it.
