hmmm.. all these replies about gm synchromesh being really good for the car. well, i have royal purple mtf and it was good for the first 4 or 5k miles that it was on. then.. all hell broke loose and the popping out/grinding came back. so that poses another question: is the synchromesh any better in solving the problem or is it just a band-aid to the REAL solution?

i am so pissed off with third gear.. i think about it all the time even when i'm not in my car.

thinking about bringing it to the dealer tomorrow.. i printed out this service bulletin:

TSB - Technical Service Bulletins
Make : HONDA Model : CIVIC Year : 2006
Manufacturer : HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)
Service Bulletin Num : 1205
Date of Bulletin: DEC 16, 2005
NHTSA Item Number: 10018868
Component: POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Summary:
TRANSMISSION GRINDS AT SHIFTS, SKIP SHIFTING.

and the parts list for someone that got it fixed before:

1 23450-PNS-000 Gear
1 23444-PNS-306 Gear Set, Third
1 24210-PNS-010 Fork (3-4)
1 94109-14000 Washer, Drain (14mm)

Wish me luck! I'll be sure to let you guys know how it goes.

Royal Purple Synchromax and GM Synchromesh are a 0w10 weight fluid and is too light to be run in a daily driver. The Honda MTF has a viscosity of a 30weight oil. So if you are looking for something better run RP 5w30 motor oil or the Racing XPR 5w30. I ran that on the track for years and the lowest I would go was XPR 5w20 which use to be called Racing 11.

My gear grinding went away (3rd popping and 2nd gear grind) after Amsoil MTF Synchromesh was added. Then the 2nd gear grind @ high rpms came back. Dealership adjusted cable and it is gone.... FOR NOW...
