I just brought my car in for the 10k maintenance. While the gentleman was getting the paper work and what no ready, I made a comment about my third gear and that I had heard (Thanks 8th Civic!) that honda had put out a TSB or something on the MTF and they had some new stuff out. He told me he didnt know anything about it but he would look it up for me. I told him thanks, and went to the waiting area. While I was sitting there checking out an 07 Si Sedan(Damn thier floor mats! ) A sales guy came up to me and we started chatting, turns out he has an 06 Si and alos hadnt heard about the new MTF. So he went and checked it, found the TSB(or what ever it is) and took it out the the service guys. They finshed the work, and off I went. First, the new MTF is great. I cant really say anyting about what the other guys have put in thier cars, but this new stuff is great. Its like driving a dif car really. I love it. If you are having problems with 3rd, take it in and have them change out the MTF. They did it under warrenty for me, so im sure its the same for you. Even if its not perfect to you, its so much better than the old stuff. Happy everyone!

Replace the MTF

NOTE: This article applies to all M/T-equipped Honda cars and trucks.

We’ve heard reports of customers complaining about the M/T shifting stiffly or popping out of gear. In each case, the M/T was using aftermarket MTF or old Honda MTF. If you’ve got a vehicle in your shop that fits this profile, try draining the MTF and replacing it with new Honda Genuine MTF (P/N 08798-9031, H/C 8429094). This new MTF offers better overall shift quality in cold weather (especially in freezing temperatures), and it’s got better friction reduction for improved fuel economy and longer transmission life. After filling the M/T with this new MTF, take a 10-mile test-drive around town so you can do a lot of shifting. If you’ve still got this problem after your test-drive, then it’s time to do some troubleshooting.

Hey guys, just wanted to throw some more weight behind the MTF swapout to fix this problem. Although I only had 3rd pop out on me a couple times I did notice that some of the shifts were a little more notchy than they should be. I ordered a couple bottles of Amsoil MTF a few weeks ago and had a local shop swap it out for me today. The difference is definitely noticeable. The notchiness from 1st to 2nd is basically gone and significantly reduced from 2nd to 3rd. 5th and 6th both engage more cleanly too. I think the most noticeable thing though was the transition from Reverse to 1st. Everything just slides into place now. By far worth the price I paid (25 for the Amsoil, 25 for the labor). I guess I could have taken it to the dealer for free but I honestly don't trust dealerships as much as this local shop. (Far East Motorworks for those Atlanta folks)

Quick bumping this thing. I'd like to see if anyone else has had any problems since the new Honda MTF fluid was swapped in.

I'm close to 900 miles on my Si and it happened again this morning. Has probably happened 5-6 times total now...

Where'd you order the Amsoil?

I also had the 3rd gear problem, but 2 bottles of amsoil mft solved that.
Took less than 30 mins to change the fuild on my driveway with jackstands.

That's great to hear. I'm going to skip the new Honda MTF and go straight to the Amsoil. :)

Did you order straight from Amsoil?

This is what I need?

First time I asked the dealer near me they said they've heard nothing of anyone having xmsn problems. Then I asked them to check the fluid in the Tranny and they said everything was fine. I'm still shaky on allowing one of their mechanics to drive it. A buddy of mine worked on hondas and acuras before coming into the Army and he certainly noticed it.

I am very doubtful that they checked your transmission fluid level. When I went to check mine the Honda MTF leaked all over the place. I didn't think an uber lot would come out from the check hole and I didn't have my drain pan in place. Very disappointing. Now I have the correct amount of Amsoil MTF and my Si is shifting like a champ.

Thanks yeah they gave me the "this guy is a tard" look when I asked them to check it. My amsoil should be here tomorrow or the next day I did 2nd day delivery. As soon as it's in gonna do the change.

When I went to my dealer to make an appointment to change the MTF, they said the service would cost $70. Also when I went back the next day at my appointment time, they said they didn't have the new MTF fluid in stock and wouldn't be getting it for several weeks. O_o

This is going to sound stupid, but because of the lower viscosity of mtfs like amsoil, are we giving up anything in terms of longevitiy for our engines?

I have a 07 Si Sedan and the 3rd gear popped once, made a hell-a-noise; and since then i notice that maybe 1 out of every 15 shifts into 3rd from 2nd requires force, or kid gloves. If i bought my car in June 07 does it need this new tranny fluid, or has this problem bigger than a fluid swap? any info would help here, but i don't want to go to my dealer and bitch about this,.. they JUST fixed the front suspension 2 days ago,.. the notorious bump stop BS. I love these forums,. if i know anything mechs and service reps love informed customers. (sarcasm)
