^^ thats y even if im experiencing that 3rd gear problem, i still have'nt change my transmission fluid, i dont wanna take a risk voiding my drivetrain warranty.

*note most people who work on dealership like the change oil guys, they don't know how to work on transmission, and only a few people who really knows what thier doing, and i bet theres only one master tech/ASE certifide in one dealership whos working on transmission. so thats y i dont trust those people who put liquids on my car, i do my own stuff even though i only save a little bit, but atleast i know that i put the right stuff in.

wow, what an annoyance. When I think its in gear, it pops out or grinds in. 3rd only. Now I slam it into 3rd to make sure, but I shouldn't have to. Warm, or cold, doesn't matter. any work arounds?

I think this could also be hella dangerous, not only to the engine, but to ourselves; imagine driving along passing someone on the highway in 3rd, and it pops out.

So it's obvious this isn't an isolated event. I should print this out (all five pages) when I bring my car in.

Proof it's not only I having this problem.

When I used to drive the car, I would try to shift fast in order to keep accelerating at the same rate as the rest of traffic. This was when I used to get 2nd gear and 3rd gear grinding. Recently, I went ahead and started slowly shifting to 2nd and 3rd gears and have yet to experience grinding as often as it occured when I used to shift faster. My main gripe about this is how slowly I need to be shifting. Also, shifting into 4th, 5th, and 6th don't require slow shifting. I don't know what gives and why the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros have so many problems.

the new fluid seems to be better. Hasn't grinded once. Maybe thats because iam being extra careful. Maybe just changing the fluid does the trick

15k on mine, it happens often, and I've been driving standards for 29 years. Shift slow or fast, hard or easy, clutch to the floor and held in or not as long, and it doesn't matter. If its gonna do it, it does it. I'm gonna change my fluid, but I've got to wait until spring I have no garage and got lots of snow! This is the single most annoying thing about my car. I love the car, but when this happens it makes me angry.

Just picked up my car from its 5 hour stay at the service center... unfortunately, they were not able to find anything wrong with my 3rd gear issue. Sigh...
Hopefully, it's just my driving/shifting.

BINGO! The answer is right here. Honda has released a new MTF formulation. It comes in a bright green labled bottle as opposed to a dark green labled bottle. I had this put in on friday and it definately was smoother shifting. Honda must have realized that the problem was the fluid because they released the new one. Not all dealers are even aware of the new fluid. I stopped by one local dealer the other day and they still had the old fluid on sale. I asked about the new and he'd never heard of it. I told him about the 3rd gear issues and thte new fluid. He called another dealer to check my story and they had the new fluid and had sent back all of the old stuff. He said thanks and proceded to call his parts manager. So all those of you with the 3rd gear issue that havn't resolved it yet, go get a fluid change with the new Honda MTF and see for yourself.

This thread over @ k20a.org has some interesting info:
http://www.k20a.org/forum/showthread.php?t=21017

Probably not the best option for many people because of cost, and most of you really won't need to go to that extreme, but if you're planning on making a lot of power, or frequently track your car, it may be a decent investment for you.

I can honestly cay the 3rd gear grind is much better now. not sure if its the improved the honda fluid or just a clean fluid. I got mine done under warranty cus i kept bitching about the grinding and told them that i would make them replace the synchros if they didn't try the fluid change. Try it and tell me what you guys think.

i am actually at my honda dealership right now having this issue addressed. They are changing out my tranny fluid with some new stuff that came out recently. I was going to run some syncromesh to see if that solved it, but honda offered to try this new stuff for free to see if it helped. The problem is that it is a hard problem to re-create. This is my 4th visit here, but they have been nothing but helpful. I'll let yall know if this helps.
