Thumbs up Glovebox rattle fixed with pics!

I brought in my car today to fix the rattle from my glovebox. Basically the rattle happens because there is a bit of play in the locking mechanism as I had pointed out to the service rep at the dealership (San Francisco Honda).

When I picked up my car, the service rep told me that they were unable to reproduce the rattle in their test drive, but went ahead and added a piece of insulation to take care of the rattling noise.

Basically, they wrapped a piece of felt around the metal loop where the door closes. I took it out for my test drive and it seemed to have fixed the problem. I didn't have to pay anything to get this checked out as it was covered under warranty, but you can definitely do it yourself as a ghetto fix.

Here are some pics of the added "insulation":

It's not a pretty fix, but it works. :)

No problem. If you bring this to the dealer to fix, feel free to print the post above for clarification.

thanks 8th gen user. I was wondering though, go a few threads down and read my posts. Does the rattle I'm describing (and the misalignment) sound like your rattle?

i had the same rattle with mine (glovebox) and they were able to fix it...took the whole thing out and put it back in. maybe it just needs to be tightend? re-adjusted?

I think mines needs to be re-adjusted, i can see that my glovebox doesn't align corrected with either side of the dash on top, near the bottom though, it lines up normally. Did they give you a tsb for it?

I believe it is the same rattle. I've often done the same interim solution of opening the glovebox while driving so I don't have to hear that stupid rattle noise.

I'm not sure why your glovebox isn't aligned properly, but you should point that out to your dealer and get it fixed to your liking. Unfortunately, they might not be able to get it perfectly straight.

Yeah i'll do that, because mines doesn't sound like a piece of metal rattling, it sounds more like plastic rattling. I'm going to take it to the dealer son regardless.

I did that to my car about 6 months ago...then took it off when I realized it wasn't helping the noise much. I did find out that the right side of the door hits the dash when closed. I added little felt circles where the rubber nubs hit the glovebox so now they hit the felt and also a little felt piece on the right side where it hits the dash and that seemed to quiet it down. I may go and add felt to the latch again, but its not really making much noise now (could be cause its warmer).

Good idea about the felt circles. That should help as well. I think I'll go ahead and add my own as a precautionary measure. Thanks for sharing the idea.

I think thats what's making the noise in my car. The right side of the glove box is pushed in a lot more than the left side.

about your rattles, when does yours happen? does cold weather play into this? ive been trying to track down the cause of this 'noise' in my glove compartment, heres what i posted on the other thread.

btw which screws are you talking about exactly, pictures would be great! im more of a visual person.

thanks for this fyi, if anything else its some new thing to try to kill this intermittent noise

p.s. (currently around 40-50 degrees temp wise here in IL/WI) the sound occurs most when the car isnt used for awhile (say overnight) and start it up the next day cold run the sound (rattle, clank) whatever you want to call it (friends have told me its like bare wire being smacked on plastic ever so annoyingly, barely audible at times, and very pronounced at times) happens on bumpy roads as well, im weary about sending my car to the dealer since they are... well they... lets just say they dont inspire confidence in me.

thanks in advance for any info on this.

Some fix, you'd expect that from Kia. Very disappointing.

my rattle is being caused by the misaligned glove box, i tried "realigning" it but it doesn't seem to work. I also brought it to 3 honda dealers and non of them could fix it. It doesn't see like a hard fix, just order a dam new one jeeze.

My Glove box seems to be tighter on the right side then the left. When I push on the globe box door when it's closed it has some play and you can hear a noise when you push it.

Some felt circles or rubber bump on's should work just fine.

same here. I told honda my problem (3 dealers) and show them specifically what was wrong, two of them said they heard it, one kept ignoring it. I still haven't gotten it fixed and it's annoying. The two that heard the rattle said they fixed it but they didn't even touch it.

Someone on this forum got it fixed by ordering a new glove box. I saw that the other sedans on the lot had perfectly aligned glove boxes. I don't understand why it's so hard to order a dam new one for me. That'll solve the friggin problem.

This is so F'ing halarious. I went to the dealer last week because they neglected to tell me that the radio has a no power security code if you unhook the battery. I hate Jonhsoncity, TN Honda.

anyways at another local dealership in kingsport this young fellow who is an awesome tech got into my car to run some radio codes and the first thing he did was slap the glove box a few times to make sure it didnt have play. Im thinking that this must be an extremely common issue with the new civics.
