Do you know motor oil stuff? THAN COME ON IN!

OK, so a friend of mine ran his car with no oil in it today, and he left the car at my house so i can add some oil in the morning. (gas station wants $14 a quart!!)

So my first question is, how can i tell how much damage he did? he said the cars been "lagging" when hes been starting it. Also heard a "knocking" sound

Secondly, we've all been in pep boys and saw that "oil stabilizer" stuff, should i put some of that in his engine? I heard a rumor a while back that it loosens gaskets or breaks seals

Any help would be appreciated

well thats not good now is it ... if hes been driving it and it has been "empty" for a while who knows what kind of damage he could of caused ...

a compression test could be performed in order to determine if the rings have been damaged badly and are unable to hold normal compression which would explain the lack of power

he can also add oil, change it in 500 miles, and have the old oil examined for metal ex camshaft metal is diff then cylinder metal etc.

its his DD and he barely cares for it (clearly ) idt hes gonna go thru all that, i just want it back in working condition, and if he notices a substancial loss of power we'll take it from there

brian, you arent going to be able to tell how much damage was done. a trained mechanic would (with a compression test and a engine teardown if it fails the test).

i dont think there is anything you can do besides just add oil and hope for the best.

oil light came on when braking cause the little amount of oil that was in the pan probly sloshed around and wasnt gettting picked up by the pump.

exactly. This sounds like your friend is being cheap and instead of taking it to a mechanic he dropped it off for you to play doctor and bring his car back to health. The truth is that if it was very low or empty and was running for awhile then he damaged it and nothing will fix it short of replacing parts. No oil stabilizers(IDK why you even think these will help in this situation)or any other fluid is going to help this car more than just adding oil,and that is probably only going to get the car running a little better.Tell your friend to walk,it's cheaper than destroying an engine.

Somehow? like when the brakes are applied and the little remaining oil sloshes away from the oil pump pickup, and a total loss of oil pressure results...

If he's that low, and the engine is making noises, it's too late, you won't find any miracle in a bottle to fix it.

Umm..Need Advice...VANOS job in progress after 40k on an oil change - Page 4 - Bimmerforums - The Ultimate BMW Forum

if that guy made it, anything is possible.

vvt-i is who, toyota or nissan ? either way a first step is to drain whats left of the oil, swap filters and put a thick conventional oil.

like a 10w40 or 5w40. and thats about all that can be done. if it runs fine swap the oil out after a few hundred miles . if its still knocking and bogging like a mofo, the motors damaged.

at that point brian, tell your friend to get a cold air intake and start ripping through big ass puddles to hydrolock the engine. insurance will pay for the 'accidental' engine damage
