Burning Smell From Engine

Lemme just say I just got my 09 civic si 4dr like 2 days ago and I love it. I was fooling around in a parking lot today trying to launch it, probably not a good idea cause ive only been driving a stick for a week or so. but anyway when I parked I smelled something burning from inside the car.
I was hopeful it was the wheels but low and behold i put my face to the hood and took a whiff...smelt something burning from there.

anyway my dad got some sort of insurance when he got the car, but does that cover transmission and stuff? even when its your fault??

somebody enlighten me, im freaking out that i hurt my new baby :-( :-( :-(

you more than likely burnt the clutch to hell. How many miles on it? Is it new or used? If it's new you probably ruined the clutch. It needs to break in for about 250-500 miles.

it is your clutch since you are inexperienced with driving a stick and now your trying to launch the car

anytime you launch a manual your going to burn the clutch up ... and to answer your question about the "insurance" which i am assuming is the warranty, they are not going to cover that since your clutch is a "wear-n-tear" item on the car ...

stop launching your car until you can drive a stick, even then it isnt the best to do that

if its new, dont launch it and all that stuff. be easy, minimal vtec and let everything break in properly. the smell is probably the clutch or the engine being new and just normal new car heating up stuff...hard to explain i guess. i know my mom's crv stunk up the garage for a week or two when she first got it.

if its used... have someone who knows cars look @ it because u could be roasting the clutch or something worse?

well... if its brand new and he's already torched the clutch.. ive heard the dealer would replace it if u claim its faulty but idunno..no persona experience on that.

Take it from somebody who literally fried their first clutch to dust. DO NOT MESS AROUND TILL AFTER BREAK IN PERIOD! I had to pay a lot to get the car fixed after I messed up and let's just say I sure as hell hope you don't how many miles on the car? My clutch got fried at 6200. I learned my lesson. I am at 32k now with that new clutch and no more issues.

the first few days after i bought my new 2010 si, i smelled some funky stuff coming from the engine. it was gone within 2 or 3 days. it was a combination of the clutch burning and just random crap in the engine.

....i got it with 4000 miles on it, so it wasn't brand new. but still, i feel like such an ahole.

i drove it last night to mcdonalds like shifting at 3000 rpm and it seemed pretty fine, the smell went away but im sure i messed up the clutch royally.

Just like the beer commercials, there's two ends of the spectrum (too light and too heavy). If I wanted to drive like my grandmother, I wouldn't have bought an SI in the first place. That said, if you get that burning smell often, then you are going to replace your clutch frequently.

Been driving a clutch 30 years and like to have fun with them. On my '97 Civic, I replaced the clutch about every 80k miles, which I feel is a lot of mileage for how hard I drive the car. But I don't do burn-outs either. I rarely pop the clutch.

Got the burned smell from my SI last night after my daughter backed it into garage (a short uphill). She definitely let the clutch slip too much and probably had too many rpms. But I'm not worried about it at all. Yes, she probably took a few thousand miles off of the clutch, but the clutch is NOT "burned up." We'll spend some time and I'll teach her how to do it without burning the clutch.

So ... NO you didn't just destroy your clutch, but YES if keep driving like that you certainly will in short order.
