Lurching in 4th gear M/T sedan LX
Hey all,
I've had this issue for awhile so I thought I'd post about it and see if it's really a problem. While maintaining speed in 4th gear, the car will lurch a bit every 5-10 seconds or so. It's irritating because it doesn't seem to be speed or rev dependent (will happen at 35mph to 45mph generally). Does it want me to shift up/down? Doesn't really make sense because that's the sweet range for 4th. Also, it seems to only happen when I'm trying to maintain a constant speed. If I vary the speed even a little bit while staying in 4th, the lurching goes away. Anyone else experience something like this and do you think it's a problem or just inherent to the transmission. Thank for any help! Nightskye |

that is exactly what mine does, i dont want to go into 3rd because it will be noisy(exhaust) and driving in 4th at that speed just keeps jerking the car

My '06 LX with an A/T does it too. It's very annoying. It occurs at speeds above 50mph and most often when I use the cruise, although if the cruise is off and I am maintaining a speed above 50mph it still does it, but not as often. I have never owned a car that has done this. Has anyone with an automatic transmission noticed this?
Ethlar: what is the dbw system and what does a reflash for the R18(?) model mean??? I am about due for the first oil change and would like this problem fixed when I take it in for service. |

DBW is the Drive by Wire system that our cars have for the throttle, and reflashing is simply updating the software for the computer that controls the throttle system. There is no official reflash available for the R18 civics but i believe there was a change and that change would be updated simply by them checking the system with their shop computers.

Ethlar: Duh, now I feel stupid....I knew the new Civics were drive by wire but couldn't figure out the acronymn. Anyhow, could the lurching or jerking that I am experiencing be caused by the faulty software that controls the throttle and would this problem be inherent to both the manual and auto transmission cars? It is odd that it doesn't occur at speeds below 50mph and does so more often when the cruise is set than when it is not. If there is not a TSB or recall on this how can I get my dealer to fix this?

I just posted a thread on this very issue. But you know, the funny thing is, I just seemed to really start noticing this on my 2008 Civic the other day. It has 5k miles on it. I don't know why I am just now noticing it.... Weird, and a little annoying. Anything we can do to remedy this?

I just don't understand why the problem has seemed to crop up in the last few weeks on my car. When I first got it, I didn't even notice it at all. And it seems to me that I would have.... I have 5k miles on it now, and it's just become noticeable in the past 500-1000 miles or so.
