Blackened exhaust tip

Hi,

I have a 2006 SI, 300k, and I have noticed the exhaust tip has started to turn black. Have not been racing the car or going into i-vtec, been driving and shifting around 3500 to 4500 rpm. Has anyone experienced this?

Its normal to pick up a little bit of soot/dirt on the tip...just wipe it off and dont worry about it.

Now if its turning the entire tip black, that might be cause for concern...

Or 30,000 miles or 30,000 km. If it is that much I think it's time to clean you injectors if soot keeps coming out.

300 k doens't mean 30 k

i'm guessing 300 k miles? haha. if that was possible, and if thats what he has, then i'd probably guess teh whoel car to be black.

Clean your exhaust tip with car wash soap and a sponge every time you wash it. Polish it with metal polish once in a while, and wipe it down with a cotton terry towel (a cheap one) after you wash/dry it each time.

I know. I'm saying it's probably a typo on his part.

Its just carbon buildup. After runnin the Si on the dyno I can see why. The factory program is a bit on the rich side. My Mustang is tuned near perfect and the tips are just as clean on the inside as on the outside.

It's normal. Just wipe it off and you're good to go.

As others have said its running rich. Also, with you babying it, there is probably a lot of carbon build up. Get on it hard once or twice, there will be a large puff of black smoke; thats all of the carbon that has built up in your engine.

^ +1,000. Using a higher quality "Tier-1" gasoline will help. Chevron, or Shell.

bringing this thread back from the past lol

yeah well, on my magnaflow stainless steel cat back tip, i was polishing it, and noticed on top side of it, i got like a ton of carbon buildup.. but its like hard and is almost like thick as if its like a tar like substance that dried.. i dunno.. it refusess to come off with a few solutions i tried... what could it be that could be causing such rough and hardened carbon buildup? oh yeah, its just on the quarter moon of the exhaust tip, if you know what im saying.
