2006 Civic Overheated!

I have close to 20,000 miles on my '06 Civic and it over heated this past Sunday. I can't believe I am dealing with this with a relatively brand new HONDA!

The dealer is looking into this. He asked me questions that he says Honda will want to know the answers to: (1) What happened when the car overheated? (I explained that I was sitting at a light and it just started overheating) (2) Did I drive the car while overheated? (I said no because I knew where he was going with this one) (3) Was the car in an accident? (I told him a deer hit me last Spring..but he didn't ask for details) So far he told me that there is an antifreeze leak, but he said they are still unsure what caused this.

Does anyone know if there are any known problems with the Civic that would cause this? I did mention to the dealer that ever since I bought it I noticed that the car can get hung up at around 35-40 mph.....I thought it was normal for this car, so I never pursued it. Now I am wondering whether there may be some connection?

Thanks!

Does the civic use a mechanical thermostat? If so, the deer hit might have jarred something wonky and caused the thermostat to finally stick.

if you had a pinhole leak you wouldn't notice it so much. I would say that maybe all the antifreeze that leaked out dried up before you could notice it. Slowly the level of antifreeze went down to a point where there wasn't enough to cool the engine.... hence the over heating.

From past experiences... hitting a deer messes with all kinds of stuff. I had an isuzu trooper that I hit a deer in. It mashed the front bumper into the washer fluid resovior causing it to leak all over, so a small radiator leak is possible.

my car's about 6months old and noticed the other week that my
coolant was below the "LOW" mark. i bought some type2 at the
dealership and had to pour maybe 0.5liter to get it back to near
the "MAX" mark. i have it about 10mm below the "MAX" mark.

im going to see if i have a leak somewhere over the weekend if
it's warm...or if the coolant just contrated in the cold... (?)

Isn't this the 3rd or 4th person that has reported a cracked 8th gen civic engine on the site?

Phoenix: Yes, this is under warranty ...thankfully.

Janizary: I would be very interested in knowing whether there are others....perhaps this is a TSB in the making.

dear me..

uh, could it be possible, just possible mind you, that the deer hit has absolutely NOTHING at all to do with this latest problem? Could the block or head have cracked or a gasket somewhere crapped out or the radiator hose sprung a leak on its own etc etc? The deer has come and gone and the problem occurred a year later.

Hey Target: I brought up the deer hit in my original post because, in his attempt to determine the cause of the problem, the dealer wanted to know if the car was in an accident. At that time, I informed him of the deer hit that occurred months earlier in the Spring.

After further investigation, the dealer determined that the problem is a defect. This is why I would really like to hear about the other people who have complained about cracked engines......if anyone has any links to these posts I'd appreciate reading them.

deer me revisited

Oh, believe me I know what you are saying...I was, in effect, deriding those who posted earlier trying to be smart asses about the problem. What exactly is cracked? the block..the head?

Is your civic K20 or R18 engine. That would be interesting information what he asked; what on the engine cracked? Did the crack cause coolant to pour out? did the crack burn out thru the exhaust? in which case you would have noticed bluish/whitish exhaust.
