Can you hear music from outside your car?

a few days ago, i left my girlfriend in my car momentarily while i ran into the house to get a jacket, and left the radio on to keep her entertained. upon coming back, i realised i could hear quite a lot of the music from the outside of the car, even with all the doors, windows, sunroof, boot etc. closed! this is at comfortable volume levels ("5" by my head unit). i could actually hear quite a bit of detail in the music too, from bass right through to treble, which surprised me given that i have 4 layers of dynamat xtreme and 2 layers of ensolite right behind each speaker. (stock sound system)

i'm wondering, can anyone else also hear their music from outside their car when playing at comfortable volume levels? if not, then i think i may have found my road noise gremlin - music leaking out from (presumably) the door deals <-> noise leaking in from the same place!

Same deal. I stepped outside for a bit with the keys in the car to check out my park job and I could hear the music crystal clear with everything shut - doors and windows. Doesn't bother me though.

IMO the civic still has poor insulation. In my old 96 accord, i would have the music up 25% with my sub, and all you could hear was a slight thump when the bass hit. For the civic, you can hear everything, even at low volumes. I gotta find out where it's coming from.

kinda makes me realise i'm putting a lot of money and effort into dynamat and ensolite when i might be totally missing the real problem. kinda like having 2 leaks in the ceiling, and hoping both leaks will stop just by patching only one of them up really well.

Yes, I can. Even the AM news channel with the volume set at "10", I can hear clearly outside the car.

You know, I'm going to be honest here. Up until my Del SOl and then this model Civic, I really didn't like Civics. I never thought I'd actually own one. One of the main reasons why I never bought one was because they seemed so thin skinned and hollow. But, this one is the best built Civic ever. The only thing that reminds me that i still have a Civic is the fact that I feel like a rolling speaker.

But! If you're at a bbq or something and you open the trunk up and crank your volume you have an instant club.

i seem to have the opposite deal as everyone else.
I usually have my HU at 15+ and with all the doors and windows closed, its not really noticeable, compared to my previous cars anyways.

Should only be a bad thing if you have bad taste in music, and are embarrased about it. Also, every other car on the road has sound dampening stuff in it - so they still won't hear you.

Pedestrians will hear you, but they'll be too jealous to care. I mean, here you are with a sweet new ride while they have to walk.

Just don't buy erotic tapes, and you'll be fine.

Got me curious now, I will crank my radio and step outside and listen to it. Just hope someone don't rob me.

sorry for the late reply... email notification didn't work for some reason.

i'm not really concerned about people outside my car hearing my music :) what i am concerned about though is because people outside my car can hear noise from inside the car, then that means there is a free path for noise to flow from the inside of the car to the outside. and because there's a free path for noise to go inside->outside, the same path can be used for outside road noise to get inside. essentially i'm saying that this could be a major contributing factor towards my road noise problem :)
