There are no synchros for the reverse gear, so you'll have to make sure you aren't moving at all when you actually stick it in there.

Did you have your hand on the shifter while this all happened? If it didn't go in all the way, then it'd usually just "pop out." The grind only lasts as long as you're putting force. If it doesn't go into gear (which I should mention is perfectly normal), then you'll have to stick it in a forward gear i.e. 1st gear, then put it into reverse. Sometimes going into neutral to reverse doesn't work.

Lastly, you shouldn't have your hand on the shifter for everyday driving. If you look carefully, the knob actually doesn't stay stationary and "hovers" around a bit. Doing so will put premature wear on the synchros and tranny.

Hope that helps.

lol ya I didn't realize when I first started driving this car that you had to be at a complete stop to go in R and that was the loudest crunch ever lol

the revese idler gear is slid into mesh with the main shaft and output shaft....so if either is still rotating (car is moving or clutch not fully dissengaged) you will get grinding.

Heres a trick...works on all honda manual transmissions. was given to me by a buddy of mine thats owned a few hondas (yes the reverse issue has been a thing w/ honda manual transmissions..you'd figure they would get it down pat by now). Before putting the car in reverse, move the shifter into 2nd gear, push forward and over into reverse(keeping the car still of course), this is true, reverse has no syncros so if you start your car and throw it right into reverse the car must be COMPLETELY still, or else u will grind Reverse. I've been doing this and have'nt had any problems..works like a charm....my friend was explaining to me that by moving the shifter into second and over..gets the gears alligned or some shit..idk..like i said, I've been doing this and no problem, before doing this i would constantly grind reverse..ouch!
