Hail damage

Been pretty stormy here in Chicago lately and I have oficially become a first time hail damage victim. Got the trunk, roof, hood, and rear quarters. Looking for some of your experiences/advice with getting this kind of damage fixed? Do shops usually just replace all the panels or is it possible they pull the dents? I'm covered with insurance but want to make sure that it's done right at the shop.

It all depends on how big the dents are and where they are...if it looks like this it's body shop all the way. If your dents are smaller PDR guys can usually pop them out. I had 3 brothers that rented stalls from the shop I managed and they worked wonders with cars! If you go body shop they will usually replace the hood, trunk, and any parts that don't require cutting and welding. Most of the time they will try and straighten the roof. Post pics and I will let you know what I think. Here is one that came thru my shop a few weeks ago. Baseball size hail! Busted out the front winshield too!

Damn, I had this happen to my 86 IROC in highschool. I assume the people who fixed it filled the dents and then repainted the body work.

Yup, Chicago has definitely been stormy lately. I walked home from school during part of it last night, luckily it was the best time to have walked through it. Pretty intense though last night. Saw quite a few of the buildings get hit. Sorry about your car. Good luck with it!

My cousin had hail damage a few months ago on his 2002 Civic LX sedan. The car was black back then. He called the insurance company and they cut him a check to get it fixed. He took the money to a bodyshop, had all the dents pulled and smoothed and brought the car to his friend for a repaint. Now it's Candy Apple Red with a darker candy coat on the marblized the hood. Candy paint FTW!!!

Sorry to bring a thread back from the dead, but my car got jacked up by hail the night before last, and although not as bad as the car in the post, it still makes me sick. Probably at least 20-30 little dents. I'm getting ready to call the insurance company. This sucks.

Get the money from your insurance company. Go around to all the car dealerships and find the paintless dent removal guys in the parking lots. A lot of them will work from home on the side. Ask them how much they will charge for cash (remember CASH talks) They will give you a better quote and you will be able to pocket a good chunk of insurance money. There is a awesome guy who works the Schaumburg Toyota lot. He is there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He is incredible at removing dings/dents with his tools.

hang on a second... what if the insurance company cuts him a check that needs to be endorsed by the body shop? then he'll end up losing money!

my thought on this is that he just goes straight to the PDR guy and pay cash...

I tried the "parking lot" guys once, they ruined my car. When I saw my car, I literally felt my hair raising. Ended up going to Maaco, who surprisingly did a superb job and charged me half what other shops charged.

Well the good news is my deductable is low, so I'm going to get a few estimates and see what the best option is. It sucks though, I don't even feel like washing my car until something is done, I don't want to see and feel all the dents. Hail ftl.

Have the insurance check cut to you. Just tell them you are shopping around for different shops. I have State Farm Insurance and there was no problem getting the check in my name when I was hit from behind.

I don't know what kind of guys you found that screwed up your car. Yes there are hacks, and there are guys who know what they are doing when it comes to bodywork. The reason I say go for paintless dent removal is so you have a 100% color match on your car since they are not going to repaint it. I am just trying to help this guy pocket some money that can be used elsewhere on his car.

I've only made one claim on my insurance since I got it, and it was after someone broke into my car(not the si) and tried to cut the alarm, but cut every wire in the dash. It was about 3000 dollars worth of damage, and they cut the check in my name, so I'm sure they will do the same thing this time. I don't want to be greedy (karma's a bitch!!) but it would be nice to at least get enough extra to cover my deductable. Thanks for the help guys!
