Strange trans noise
My civic makes a strange noise shortly after shifting from park to drive. This usually occurs when parked on a slope. The trans shifts into drive without a problem the noise occurs after it is in drive and you start to move forward--the noise sounds almost like a scrapeing sound. At first I thought the airdam on the front of the car was scrapeing but now find its the trans. Anybody else having this problem?

it's normal. what ur'e doing is putting pressure on ur park lock in the tranny, and when u shift out of it, there is rubbing togetehr. if u want to get rid of that, next time you park on a slop, either turn the wheell into a curb, or hit the parking brake hard enough so that when u release your foot break, the car doenst' roll forward at all.

then what you're doing not pulling the brake hard enough. if the car moves a little bit after you release the pedal brake, then it will lock against the tranny. To avoid putting this stress, you use the e-brake. if you are parking on a slope, a very steep one, ur brake most likely wont hold the car too much, in this case, u would want to turn your wheel and bump it against the curb, hit the e-brake, and put in park. you said it only happens on a slope, and thats the case. My mothers car is a 2004 accord auto, adn it does the same thing, however, i elimate that grinding sound by the above. btw, this is the coolest smily. haha

I've had this problem on my 06 Civic ex coupe two weeks after I bought the car. I have searched just about every forum regarding this problem.
As far as the late engagement of the tranny theory, I would hear the noise right after I press on the gas no matter how long I wait after I put it in the Drive. I feel the tranny engage as soon as I put it in the drive, but something else happens when I press on the gas pedal which creates this noise. It sounds more like a movement sound than engagement sound and yes it is bugging the s...t out of me. And yes you will hear a louder noise if your parked downhill, but that has nothing to do with the downhill load on the tranny. You will hear it without any loads on the tranny and it sounds a lot louder on downhills. I've been driving Auto transmission cars for over 26 years and I refuse to accept that this is a normal sound. |

Took my car to another dealer because the first dealer was refusing to admit that there was anything unusual about this issue. The noise gets louder the more the down slope gets steeper. It could get prety loud on downslope. The following is the second dealer respond.
"All Honda Civic Auto Trans Shift into 3rd gear and then into 1st gear when drive is selected". Is this true????? If it is, then every body should experience this loud noise. Any feedback is appriciated |

Make sure you depress the foot brake all the way down during the shift from P to R or R to D. I've noticed that if I have the depress the brake just enough to keep the car from moving, the noise will happen. I've learned to depress the brake more and haven't heard the sound since.
I can't say for sure that this is the cure to your problem, though.

My issue is when I am driving downhill, If I stop completely and shift to park (with my foot on the break all the way down and absolutely no load on the transmission) and then shift to drive, as soon as I start going, There will be a noticeable noise like a loud click/slap from the transmission. I will hear it even shifting from reverse to Drive.
From the responds I have got on this forum it sounds like it is not hapenning on all cars (which the dealer claims). Please post your results. Thank you so much. Last edited by Mateen; 11-02-2006 at 06:35 PM. |
