Skipping Gears

I thought I would start a thread on this and see what other people hat to say. Personally, in the morning if my SI hasn't had time to warm up I usually go from 1st to 3rd as 3rd is smoother and there isn't much bucking and I normally shift from 2nd to 4th if I don't need much acceleration. Is there (if any) problem with doing this? Any mechanical problems that will result? Becuase if there is any slight posibility of me messing up my tranny I would want to know.

not really.. i mean as long as your not flooring it, the trans will be fine. I usually start in 2nd too.

AS long as you keep an eye on your current speed, and on your revs, youll be fine.

I almost always start in first and I rarely skip gears because I like rowing through the gearbox. I do skip gears when I upshift sometimes.

Do not skip gears. If you have a problem complying, ask your local Honda Service Center. Skipping gears is the #1 cause of failed synchros.

Here, from my earlier post elsewhere on the Forum:

Don't Skip-Shift Gears with Manual Trannies!

I have read that it is a BAD thing to skip-shift gears; e.g., from first to third, since it messes up and can damage your gearbox's synchronizer rings.** Has anyone else heard/read about this?

**Edit: I saw this on one of the S2000 Forums some time back. Will try to find the info and post it. Be GOOD to your trannies!

Did you know that some cars FORCE you to shift from first to fourth under part throttle?

Not with any Manual Gearboxes, to the best of my knowledge.

I know the Corvette used to force you too and people used to disconnect it. Don't know if the C6 does or not.

After a quick search I found this: http://www.vettefinders.com/index.cf...e101Story/ID/8

The Cadillac CTS-V also has this feature.

I could see wearing your clutch out more pulling out in second, but not skip shifting.

Interesting find! I stand corrected. Can't see anyone who likes "real" manual trannies being happy with this dawg-ass feature. Most folks would opt to bypass it real quick!

I agree with this!

My brother has been rebuilding trannies in a tranny shop for over 20 years, I'll ask him about skipping. I don't see how it will prematurely wear the syncros. Actually, it would save wear on gears you skip.

This is 100% bull. Get in a Z28 Camaro (earlier model) or a Corvette manual. My roommate has a Z06 and if he floors it in first, it TELLS him on the screen to shift to 4th. The Honda people told me not to skip shift until I was past break-in. If something screws up, its their problem.

my friends 02 LS1 Camaro had a skip 1-4 from the factory as well...if you shifted under 3500 or something silly it would divert you to 4th gear.
If double upshifting I don't see an issue if you double clutch as that won't effect the syncho's at all... i double up and down in my wife's accord (04 v6 6spd) and just had the fluid changed and they said everything looked fine in it.

Just my experience's I was always curious if it was a bad idea but if i double up i usually double clutch like in the old'n days (LOL i'm only 24 and i act like i'm 60)

Hrm...anyone know for sure if this is bad or not. Often I get up to the speed I want, say 65 in 3rd, then just put it into 5th to cruise.

Looking at this http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm I don't think it could cause any harm at all.
