Skipping Gears
I thought I would start a thread on this and see what other people hat to say. Personally, in the morning if my SI hasn't had time to warm up I usually go from 1st to 3rd as 3rd is smoother and there isn't much bucking and I normally shift from 2nd to 4th if I don't need much acceleration. Is there (if any) problem with doing this? Any mechanical problems that will result? Becuase if there is any slight posibility of me messing up my tranny I would want to know.

i skip gears all the time....if i get on it in first and second and get up to like 55 and wanna just cruise, i sometimes go from 2 to 6..i do it so much i dont even think about it anymore....no big deal really, just as long as you go to the correct gear for the speed your going.

Don't Skip-Shift Gears with Manual Trannies! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote: Originally Posted by kevzSi heres a little trick i use for driving heavy traffic (also works in parking lots sometimes). Just be careful not to go too slow in 3rd, so you dont stall. I have read that it is a BAD thing to skip-shift gears; e.g., from first to third, since it messes up and can damage your gearbox's synchronizer rings.** Has anyone else heard/read about this? **Edit: I saw this on one of the S2000 Forums some time back. Will try to find the info and post it. Be GOOD to your trannies!

My brother has been rebuilding trannies in a tranny shop for over 20 years, I'll ask him about skipping. I don't see how it will prematurely wear the syncros. Actually, it would save wear on gears you skip. |

my friends 02 LS1 Camaro had a skip 1-4 from the factory as well...if you shifted under 3500 or something silly it would divert you to 4th gear.
If double upshifting I don't see an issue if you double clutch as that won't effect the syncho's at all... i double up and down in my wife's accord (04 v6 6spd) and just had the fluid changed and they said everything looked fine in it. Just my experience's I was always curious if it was a bad idea but if i double up i usually double clutch like in the old'n days (LOL i'm only 24 and i act like i'm 60) |

Looking at this http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm I don't think it could cause any harm at all.
