Loosening the Belt?
I need to swap out the alternator with a HO alternator, but I can't figure out how to loosen the belt. On my last car there was a specific bolt you turned to loosen it, but I can't seem to figure this one out by just looking at it. Anyone here care to help me out? thx

I had a high output alternator in my last ride...worked well. I'm assuming there is a belt tensioner on the K20 or R18. Pretty difficult to mess with without a tool from Honda, however I did it on my last ride (J30) without the Honda tool, but I can't recall how...it was a real bitch though I remember...

a simple open end wrence will work. what u need to do if irecall was take an open end wrench to the belt tensenior bolt, and push up, like u're about to unscrew the bolt, but i think u need to give the tensioner a little boost so that you dont break the bolt tension and unscrew the bolt. the tensioner will slide right up and u hsould unwrap the belt. thats what it looked like when my mechanic did it.

yea, if u look very carfully, u can see the pivot, it will be right there, it's right by what looks like the brake junction box. where all those very small metal tubes go into. it's about 2 inches in diameter. the way you can tell is by pulling the belt w/ very firm pressure, somethign will give, and thats the tensioner. u'll see it piviot in adn out. the tensioner is the third bell down, i belive, it wont be right in there. so thats why an open end wrench is needed.
the best test is the tug test. give a nice tug and u'll see the tensioner working. also, make sure u route a diagram before dissasebling so u dont forget for wtvr reason how to put it back together. edit,i'm sorry, he used an open end wrench w/ a breaker bar for more leverage as the open end wrench wasn't enough to open it, well mainly because the wrench was too short that it didnt' extend past the engine bay. |

NO! u dont lossen the bolt! u use the bolt to help u loosen the tension, not the bolt! thats why you need to give the tensioner that little boost by tugging the belt and it wont put as much stress on the bolt and lead it to unloosen the bolt? u'll understand.
