K20A2 in my FG2!
So I bought this salvage car (I understand it's going to need some fixing, no flame plz lol) I think it has an rsx-s motor and possible a civic si tranny (How do you find out if the tranny is an Si or rsx-s tranny?). Right under the throttle body it says K20A2 and I don't know where to look it for on the motor. Its not on the passenger side of the block. I took it for a spin and can't vtec lol. It cuts me at 5500 RPM. When I Rev it sounds like vtec is somehow engaging at 4700 since that's when it sounds throatier. The tranny clicks and spit my gear out twice. Maybe the motor oil is low, but its definitely not an Si motor. The intake manifold looks exactly like the rsx-s, it's blocky, not tubular lol.
I havent' done an oil change or tranny fluid flush yet (maybe the reason I can't vtec because of oil pressure), but i'm going to once I get some time. I have pictures of it, it has the intake manifold of an RSX. If it's a type s motor i'll keep it, if it's not i'll swap and sell. When I shift, the car like stops, then half a second later, it like SMACKS into gear then engages. The motor might be good, the tranny is possibly bad unless it's missing fluids everything. I'm mainly concerned about the vtec issue also. I hear aggressiveness at 4600+ then rev limited at 5500. You clearly can tell the difference in sound from 1000-4600 RPM, then 4600-5500. I don't get it though, it's weird. My battery is shot, I tried to jump start it and it wont hold a charge. My car stalls because the tube that goes from the crank to the intake is missing. I may need help with this one because i'm new to Honda, completely. I've also thought since it's a rsx-s motor, i would need the rsx-s ecu. (Speaking of ECU, maybe it's in limp mode?) I haven't checked the spark plugs yet. I haven't had any real time to check anything but the obvious to the visible eye, got back at 7 last night from socal and drove all the way back to norcal and was dead tired, then washed the new baby today and went to work. My car also has a check engine light. P2182 or something. It read it as a Coolant Temp Sensor High something lalala which is understandable since the radiator was hit.(Speaking of ECU, maybe it's in limp mode?) I tried to clear the code with an OBD2 scanner (if anyone needs their car scanned, hit me up! I can erase them if you need to get smogged), but right when it erased the code, it came right back. The car looks clean as hell, but i'm just disappointed motor wise. And yes I established already that the car being salvage, I would encounter problems so no flaming there please lol. But if anyone has suggestions hit me up and see if we can get somewhere with my new baby. I had a tC and blew my motor from major blowby on my superchargerI don't want to run into the same problem (even though im not boosting) especially with a car this sexy. Thanks you guys! Thanks, I don't know if that's anything spectacular or not. I thought it was an Si motor till my friend said the intake manifold is lower and is more squarish. Then today I read the Si is a k20z3 and the 02-04 rsx-s is a k20a2. So is the type s motor in the Si real good? Is it common?
I moved from Scion so please excuse my lack of honda knowledge. |

The k20z3 and k20a2 are very similar engines. Additionally, the RSX-S and 6th generation Si's share transmissions, just with slightly different gearing. As for limp mode, could be anything in this case. i'd suspect the busted up radiator for starters, or the air intake that doesn't seem to be connected to anything at all. As for the sloppy shifting, I'd check the transmission fluid. Get underneath the car and check for large bolt near the very bottom of the transmission, on the driver's side. That's your fill bolt. Unscrew it... if nothing at all comes out, you're likely too low (or entirely out) of transmission fluid.

That's definitely a k20a2 in there. Wonder who did that swap.
Yes, it's got slightly more horsepower than the civic si, and the si tranny is there because it has an LSD, so if you have to end up getting a tranny, get another si transmission ![]() the k20a2 doesn't have dual balance shafts on the oil pump, so it has 4 more horsepower, and revs a little faster thanks to less weight to turn on an instant. |

Yeah I was looking at the throttle body and it looks like there is no cable for the throttle control.
I did find a sensor that wasn't correctly plugged in, it looked like a sensor at the very back of the tranny or block that was linked to the fuel rail. As far as tuning capabilities, wouldn't I still have to have the si ecu to run interior functions? With turbo tcs on standalones, the stock ecu ran electrical functions inside while the standalone ran the motor functions. I guess its kinda cool there's a type s motor in there . When I tried to run the car, it does rev fast and felt like it had more torque and it doesn't really sound like an Si. I also think the motor mounts are bad, the motor shifts A LOT when I rev, the whole car jiggles. Ill get more pictures and possibly a video today since I'm off. Anymore input on the possibilities of my car being in limp mode would be perfect. Thanks you guys. Hopefully this car works fine
