Midas broke something on my poor civic

Hey guys,
I had Midas brake pads on my '06 lx coupe's front wheels for a while and the steering wheel would shake whenever I used the brakes - apparently, it was a heat dissipation problem caused by their crap pads whenever they touched the stock rotor. This morning I took it to a honda dealership and they resurfaced the rotors and changed out the pads for stock pads.

What really annoys me is that the genius at midas apparently didn't know what he was doing and destroyed something called a "dust gasket". They took me back and showed me. Apparently, he didn't release the air pressure out of that thing before he put everything back together and the first time the pads were used, it "exploded". I didn't really understand what they were telling me, yeah. Midas test drove it, so I'm thinking they heard it go and then didn't tell me they had f'ed my ride up. Those pricks.

I'm just wondering, what is this "dust gasket" thing and if it's even worth repairing - how much would that cost? To me, it just looked like a rubber ring with a hole in it. Honda wouldn't give me an estimate, said I should call Midas and see if it would be covered under the famous brake guarantee they supposedly have. I did, and Midas says it must've been Honda. I doubt that, but they have a point - I don't think I have any way of proving it wasn't Honda.

*sighs* moral of the story = never go to Midas!

I don't know what your talking about by release pressure.. because when I install pads I just swing up the caliper, remove the pad, and push the piston back and reinstall.

Midas is total ****. I have had bad experiences with them. I almost got into an accident one day after they changed my front brakes on my 1994 sentra xe 2yrs ago. They finished the job and told me everything is good. I take the car on the road, the light turns yellow and i had so much space to stop on time.....and guess what? the didn't stop. scary!!, went back to them and yelled at the A hole that did the work to fix it.

Uh.. you have to pump the brakes after the work is done btw. If anyones the idiot, its the one person that didn't test his brakes before leaving.

Agreed. I can't believe that guy above your post didn't test his brakes before he drove away...

Midas advertises that their pads are held to higher standards than most manufacturers, and that they're backed by a lifetime guarantee - that's why people buy pads from them. I just went because they have a location relatively close to where I work at and they were more convenient. They're also not cheap - only about $25 less than the Honda dealerships around me.

The problem is Midas, bro. It's not like I knowingly put my safety at risk just to save $25.

Yeah, as I said I didn't really get what they were saying. They had something swung up above the pads and on the inside of it there was a little black ring, and they told me they always stick a flathead screwdriver in between that ring and the housing around it to relieve the pressure or something.

Sounds like the dust seal around the piston was not seated after they installed new pads and now the seal is cut or worn through. This will allow water in around the piston and will rust. You need to rebuild the caliper and replace the dust seal

Midas has history of breaking something on all the cars I've ever taken there, or when someone I know takes a car there... not surprised:/

Midas is no better than Walmart. I've always said, "If you want it done right, quit being lazy and do it yourself."

Yeah, there's a boot around the piston. Sometimes, if you don't spray some silicone spray on it before trying to push the piston back into the caliper, you can get a big bubble protruding from the boot as you push the piston it. If you swing the caliper back down with that bubble still there, the pads could pinch it and it could pop. Never had it happen to me but I see how it could happen.

I went around the block and the car stopped fine... but when I tried to break from 35-40mph it seemed like something came loose and the car didn't break....this was all 2blocks away from midas. the manager said something came loose and i was like wtf?

Yeah, I think you guys are right. This sounds like what they were telling me yesterday. I was thinking of just leaving it as is but if there's a chance it could rust over I might actually do something about it. I think I remember them saying it may cause the pads to wear unevenly, something about the interior wearing before the exterior. That didn't really make sense to me, how could a rubber ring make a pad wear faster? The rust makes sense to me....rebuilding the caliper does sounds expensive though...ugh, stupid midas

Midas blew up my friends car. They did an oil change, never put the oil cap back on it. Couple of days go by, his engine blows up.. No oil in the car, it sputtered out and oil was then seen all over the engine from lack of cap. Midas sucks. plain and simple.. Do any of them even have to be certified to work there?

Damn dude, did they own up to that and pay for repairs? They just got all bent out shape when I called them yesterday, those tools.
