"Factory" oil out 500 miles early?
My dealer told me that the oil Honda puts into these new civics at the factory is specifically designed to help break in the engine, and help various things seal properly. He also told me taking it out early could **** all of this up, and that regardless of what the oil itself looks like I have to keep it in until I'm just a tad under 5k miles and the oil life thing says 15%.
But, what would happen if I were to switch it out like 500 or 600 miles early? Is my dealer right, would this be a bad idea? |

I'm really not sure what to believe. I was going to change mine at 1K miles, but decided to wait till I hit 3K. I'm not going any longer than that.augydog |

I changed my oil to Mobil 1 at 250 miles. Its not going to hurt anything if you change it before the computer says its spent. I work in the lubricants industry and have worked with a formulation chemist for a couple years that has taught me that most of what you hear isn't true.

Thanks for all the replies. But, see, I'll need to drive down to Baltimore, MD to help my brother move like in two weeks. Don't really want to, but it'd be a real display of assholery if I bail on him, heh. Problem is, that's an 8-hour ~480 mile trip. I've only got about 4,000 miles right now, and there's no way in hell I'll reach 5,000 miles before I have to leave, but I *should* be able to make at least 4400/4500. So, my choices are either change it before I leave (early), stop somewhere on the road (either on the way there or the way back) when I hit the dealer recomended 5,000 miles, or just push it and change the oil when I get back to Ohio. I don't know about driving for 2 eight-hour stretches with oil so close to its life expectancy or whatever, though. I suppose I could change it in Maryland, but I'll only be there for a day and I'd prefer to do it at the dealer I bought the car from here in Ohio because there's a few other things I want to get (those spiffy mudguards and a leather steering wheel wrap) and he already offered me a good deal on those. I was just going to change it like the day before I left, but then I remembered the dealer telling me about this "break-in" oil. Any suggestions?
Also, if I do change it early and reset the computer would that throw it's maintenance schedules for things like tire rotation and the like off? |
