damn i feel bad for my friend

ok i was in my freinds si a couple night ago and he maxed it out in 5th gear on the highway, but when he went to go into 6th he accidently downshifted into 4th, i guess cause of the close ratio gear box or what ever. he said it probly didnt hurt it that much but im just woundering if it might damaged a piston or what ever. damn i feel so abd for his car. it was still driving and everything perfectly afterwards also.

It's not due to a close ratio gearbox it's due to him not being used to a six speed....need to push it over a bit. Car is most likely fine: I doubt that he was redlining 5th but sounds like he was. Put a compression test on it just to double check though.

If anything having a close ratio between gears saves your motor in mishaps such as this.

Good luck because warranty doesn't cover bad driving

My question is...who shifts so fast from 5th to 6th that they miss a gear? Were you guys racing a jetliner?

haha this happens a lot on the RSX since the gears are pretty close.

When I first got a 6th gear... I was forcing myself to put it in... I was too afraid it was reverse haha.

It was a one time thing. As long as he doesn't do it every day, 3 times a day, he's fine.

I have taken in to the top of 4th at 175-180 km/h = 110-113 mph. Top of 5th should be around 135 or so as I understand it

If you shift fast from 5th and go straight down there should be no problem, its only when you shift slow and the shifter goes into the centre and then into 4th that you have a problem.

Huh??? The longer the time there was between the shift the better it would be. The RPM's would have time to drop a little bit

Yah the rpms would drop, but that would give time for the shifter to get "gated" and would go into 4th instead of 6th.

Doesn't the rev limiter protect pretty well against this sort of accident?

Let's do some math:

5th gear is 0.921:1, final drive is 4.765:1.
At 8000 rpm, wheel speed in 5th is 8000 divided by 0.921, divided by 4.765 = 1823 rpm. A 215/45R17 tire has a diameter of approx 25" *2*pi*1/2 = 78.5" circumference:

Therefore, speed is 1823 rpm * 78.5" = 143, 105"/min * 60min/1hr * 1ft/12in *1mile/5280ft = 135.5 mph approx.

Therefore, top speed in 5th gear should be around 135 mph. Of course, there are factors such as tire expansion at top speed, but this should give a ballpark.
