Strange Humming Sound

Hi folks. I tried searching but couldn't find anything similar. I have an 07 EX Coupe AT. As its started to get colder, it's starting to make this strange humming sound. I'll try to explain, but it's weird. It only happens in the morning when its cold out ( < 35). When I put the key in the ignition and turn to where the radio and stuff comes on, there's this humming noise that seems to be coming from somewhere behind the little cubby hole underneath the HVAC controls. It's relatively loud (can be heard with radio on). It sounds almost like an electric motor dying, if that makes any sense. The sound continues after starting the engine, but stops after a minute or two. Almost as if it's "warming" up. Then, it won't happen for the rest of the day. If its not cold in the morning, no noise. Any thoughts?

I don't think you should be worried about it. If the car drives fine, and it's only when it's cold I think that it's a normal response to the weather. There are a number of things that could be causing it, but if it's like you said it may just have something to do with the fuel pump and the weather.

This morning I figured out it's coming directly from the navi unit. Isn't there a fan in there? If there is, that would make sense. I'm thinking that's causing the sound. The car's still under warranty, so I guess I'll be giving my local honda dealer a call.

there might be a fan, but it could be the DVD drive for your Navigation Maps spinning or warming up

That's what I thought at first, but after removing both the DVD and the audio CD, the sound continues.

the navi unit does have a fan in the back... could take it all apart and blow it out with some compressed air... might have some dust collecting in there

Careful not to spin the fan with the compressed air. You'll wreck the bearings and have more noise than you do now! Keep the fan stationary and blow it out. Or better yet, take it in for warranty.
