Question Transmission gone?

What does it mean when your car can only shift gears when the car is off, but when its on, it wont go into any gear?

I may be able to get it into reverse, but its grinding like crap! Its even letting me do it when my foot is not even pressing the clutch pedal! What the heck is going on!?

sounds like you need to push the clutch in B4 tring to put it in gear.

Another vote for clutch problem. You must have toasted it good.
If you can shift if your car is turned off that's normal. Since the flywheel isn't spinning and no clutch is needed to shift. But once you turn on the car things start spinning and you have nothing to stop that spin if your clutch isn't working. So it probably isn't the tranny but the clutch.

It's probably the clutch, but it could also be the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder in which case it would be covered under warranty.

Unhappy

Its actually on my CRX. It is a cable transmisson.

See what happened was, I was driving home from work one day, then right in the middle of me shifting into second gear the clutch cable broke. I then pulled it out of gear without using the clutch pedal, because I didnt have the abilty to do so when the cable broke. So that weekend I went and got an 06 EX Coupe with Navi to make my self feel better, towed the CRX home and forgot about it for three months!

Now I want to drive it again! The clutch was in great shape right before the cable broke, so I just replaced the cable. The clutch never slipped or anything before the cable broke. I wonder if the sychronos got jacked up when the cable broke between shifts?

Question

Well, I put the clutch cable in, but I can't get it into gear. Wish I could figure out why. The clutch was fine before the cable broke.

Did you make sure you replaced the clutch cable correctly? Is your clutchfork moving when you push on the clutch pedal? Is the clutch pedal harder to push down than normal? I betcha the clutch fork got misaligned or jumped out of it's pivot point when that cable broke. Happened to me on my Mustang once.

Recheck your work.

Good Luck!

Well, I had my girlfriend press the clutch pedal and as she pressed it, I could see it go up and down. Maybe the release bearing broke?

Do I need to take the tranny off to see if the clutch fork got loose?

I don't think you do. There should be a cover of some sort that covers the clutch fork. Just follow the cable it should attach to the clutch fork.
Unhook the cable and test the movement of the clutch fork. If it is loose then it came off of it's pivot point and may need to be pushed back in.
Try to wiggle it up and down. Try to push it upward until it locks into position. Then reattach the clutch cable and see if that takes care of the problem.

I had my clutch cable break in my 78 V-dub Bus and the clutch pedal just fell to the ground...I assume this would also happen here????

Well, the clutch fork doesnt feel loose or anything, so I'm not really sure what the problem is. It has spring in it when I move it up and down, and doesnt feel any different than it did before the cable broke.

I think I should give up and just put a K20 in it!

Tear the tranny apart and check the throwout bearing, pressure plate etc.

Your right, I thought thats what it might be. Maybe somehow it got broken when the cable broke. I'm moving to a new place with a garage. Maybe now I can take my time with the car. :)
