Is this (clutch engagement point) an indication of a dying clutch?

Lately I've noticed the clutch engagement has moved up quite a bit. It used to grab like an inch off the floor, now it's like right at the end of the release.

Reason I ask is because the car only has 20k miles on it and I don't dick around with it much if at all. I've never been to the strip. I've launched the car from 3-4k RPMs maybe 10 times in the year and a half I've owned it. When I start from a stop, I usually start letting the clutch out at 1.5k RPMs, nothing crazy. I don't ride the clutch in traffic often unless absolutely necessary. The only thing I could think of attributing to the clutch dying so early would be me riding it up to 8k or so on my commutes, but I'd have to imagine most SI owners do that.. Even when I do take it up there, I never slam it into the next gear while the gas is down and power shift.

Someone on here mentioned that the engagement point is self-adjusting so I'm confused if it's actually dying or just "self-adjusting".

You can still adjust it I believe. Look at the top of the pedal. It should have a bolt you can loosen up and turn the piece that is attached on the top of the pedal going through the firewall to the clutch master cylinder. Just make small increaments of adjustments as to not to go too low or it will be difficult to get in gear. That's what I did to my other cars so I don't think it should be any different.

The service guy also told me you don't need to adjust it, but some folks like a quick grab instead of a more freeplay.

Is there any reason why it moved? Is it something that just needs to be adjusted from time to time, like wheel alignment? It still grabs just fine, just a lot higher up on the pedal than before.

It is self-adjusting, but it doesn't always self-adjust correctly. Just give it time.

FYI - The self adjusting clutch was made so that engagement would stay steady throughout clutch life. Unfortunately, it doesn't really stay steady and you can no longer predict clutch life based upon pedal travel. It literally has been primarily a bane....I don't know of any good it's caused....

Learn something new everyday... i assumed that more pedal travel for engagement was a sign of the clutch going. I dint know they were self-adjusting.

I think you should be fine, Ivtec do you?.... i learned manual trans on this car im at almost 19k miles and i beat the everliving piss out of it on the track. clutch feels the same as it did on day 1

I assumed the same thing, thanks for letting me know guys. It had me worrying for the past week.. didn't want the stigma of just another teenager burning out his clutch in 20k miles.

Well that's a classic case of a slipping clutch.. gonna need it replaced soon. Might as well do it now before it goes out when you're out in the middle of nowhere.

I agree.

You can do the test again by doing a quick run.

Go from 1st and drop it in 4th and floor it. If it still does it, it's slipping.

You can get an OEM clutch installed for about $700-800 without too much issue. College hills honda sells an OEM clutch kit for cheap.

clutch grab will come up as the clutch wears. it doesnt mean its about to die..

do one thing, try to move off in 3rd gear. if you can, youre clutch is good for a while.

I accidentally moved off 6th gear ....while trying to reverse, and the car was moving forward.....until I corrected it.

btw...is my clutch healthy ?

nayilsi, I hate to do this. He said, installed.

Some shops may be able to do it cheaper or friends, but make sure they know what they are doing. It would suck to have to do it again.
