Brakes? Which type to get?

So I was told that I need new brakes. I am slowly learning about cars, but haven't gotten to brakes yet.
  • When the dealer tells you that you need to "change" your brakes, are they just talking about the pad?
  • When would you have to change the disc?-just feeling/visual grooves?
  • Would it be better to go with the Honda brand, or is there another brand that might be better?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Your car did not come with brakes ?

just kidding, ummm, if its a normal daily driver and not a car which you take to the track, i suggest remain stock as in Original Honda Parts, as the car was designed that way, holds higher retail value, retains its warranty and stuff.

If you race and stuff, and you got cash, makes sense to upgrade to better brands.

I bet there are enough guys here to give you better advice.

go with oem. if you need just the set of pads, it's 95 bucks front and rear over at bernardi parts compared to 150++ tax if you order it to dealerships.

Generally, they mean pads. Unless you f'd them up so bad you need rotors too... Did they tell you how much wear is left (usually %)? They may be telling you to change them just to upsell you.

  • When would you have to change the disc?-just feeling/visual grooves?
Depends on your driving style. I would say that you'd typically resurface them once or twice before you replace them. You would change them when it gets to thin to resurface. But like I said, it really depends on your driving.

  • Would it be better to go with the Honda brand, or is there another brand that might be better?
For a DD, Honda is fine. But just remember, there is ALWAYS better... Just depends if you want/need/can afford it.

As for cost, it depends where you go... You can actually buy cheap pads for like 50 bucks a pop, and have them installed by a friend. Or you can give the dealer couple hundred. Prices vary depending on where you go...

I have an 06 SI and at 50,000 miles I replaced my front brake pads with Akebono ProACT pads. $70 at tirerack. Mine is a daily driver and I wanted stock or better performance with no dust or noise.

I installed them myself and flushed the braking system. I have ~2000 miles on them now, and they are great. No noise, no dust, good linear pedal effort, haven't faded yet (and that includes a few single-high speed stops). If you can get an oil change yourself, and a tire rotation, you can easily do front brake pads and flush the system.

Joe

P.s. Others will recommend OEM, which are fine, or Hawks, which I wouldn't recommend unless you are tracking or doing serious road driving.

The guy that has done some mods on my car will be putting in the front and rear brakes (pads).
I have about 40k on my 2007..i'm kinda a speeder
so it's about time.

Thanks you guys, you were very helpful! This is one of the very few times I've actually gotten people to help me instead of making fun of me. I really appreciate it.

I find the OEM Honda pads work pretty well for the street.
You should have your rotors machined at the same time to ensure your pads and rotors mate properly.

Don't buy generic raybestos crap from NAPA. I got NAPA Gold pads on a car of mine a couple years ago and they nearly killed me coming down a mountain on a snowboarding trip.

yea they are good pads but they also are noisy when cold. So if you can bare with the noise and dust, they are excellent pads.

If you aren't tracking, you don't need high performance pads for the street.

The ONLY advantange of high performance pads, in objective terms, over an OEM or ceramic-style brake pad is fade resistance. If you don't induce fade on your current braking system, you don't need a more aggressive pad that will wear faster, dust more, and make more noise.

OP has an EX and doesn't track the car. Generally you should only need to change the pads unless you warped the rotors by hard braking at high speeds. If its not too bad then they can turn them to give you a fresh face for the pad to sit on. The shop should properly imbed your new pads for you.

I can't speak for all dealerships, however my dealership when quoting a brake job will be most of the time pads and rotors (Honda Canada refers to all drums/discs as rotors). The technicians want to sell the job in full to be paid that. On occasion they may do just pads if the rotors are still in tip top shape.

I'm pretty sure with the mileage she has that they are going to tell her that the rotors need to be turned.

Maybe that's what they were quoting. I think they said it was going to cost over 300!
No thanks!
Also, there is a small chance I might be moving to Utah for a few months. If so, I will be taking my car out there. Do they make brakes/discs for winter conditions like they do tires? hmm tires is another thing to think about.

Turning the rotors is what shoots the price up. I think as long as you stick with OEM you won't have to worry about the brakes not working. Only track pads have to be heated up work properly. You should get a set of dedicated snow tires on steelies if you think you'll be experiencing bad winters

steelies, the original wheels you get with the DX and LX versions. They're steel instead of aluminum/alloy and come with the hubcaps.
