dealers that do synthetic will usually charge in excess of
$45-50 for the change....

for instance, my MINI's oil change would cost $85. lol

(i do my own oil changes)

You could but why would you. Don't try to out think the engineers.

I wouldn't use any other, as they generally are just a "cheap replacement" Play it safe and use what Honda intended, btw check out HAMP filter they are used in Japan on the Type R and Type S models, however they are $3-5 more than regular filters. You might also try using the S2000 filters, from what I was told becuase the S2k is a high revving motor it needs the better filter(makes sense) to eliminate engine oil debris, those are about the same price as regular.

Somewhere I read that FRAM filters and others along those lines are actually risky to use in any car.

does it cost more to get the honda filters from the local dealership? ordering from online is nice but the shipping is going to add up.

See below is long term oil tests of mobil1 vs amsoil,
keypoint is the wear metals at 9k miles were 50% less with amsoil.

I only use amsoil in my primary car, the two other family accords will
run motorcraft 5-20 and/or amsoil.

For your oil use factory recommendation 5-20 for R-18.
Honda will have sized the rod and main bearing clearances for
this oil. Slowing the flow rate through these bearings with a
thicker oil is not helping anything.

The motorcraft 5-20 synthetic blend is a very good oil at $2.
Top Artic is identical. These are made by Phillips Connoco.
Sometimes when I'm feeling cheap I'll mix 2 quarts of amsoil in
with the motorcraft.

I am using K&N filter HP-1010 part. I get them at
AJUSA.com, free shipping. I also get Denso for the accords.

I read an oil filter test, the K&N and Mobil1 filters are made
by champion. Heaviest construction and best synthetic
media. Although almost identical, K&N media is a little different
and flows more where Mobil 1 is going
for highest filtration. An
important feature is the cold flow rate, the other is filtration.
Another is the bypass valves. Some valves are situated where
they will dump the dirty side into the engine. I think purolator was
one of those types.

K&N and Mobil1 were the top filters, there are other good ones, like Wix
and NAPA Gold.
Denso is paper filter.

If in doubt, pick up and feel the weight of a filter.
The good ones are heavier.

yeh, if you paid money to the dealer to buy your oil, you basically
just spent about 40% or more money on the same thing you can get
from Autozone. just use the weight recommended by Honda: 5W-20.

If you're doing regular dino oil just use the one on sale and change
every 4-5k miles. with the filter and crush washer, should cost
you no more than maybe $14-15. (4 bottles $1.25-$3 each)

If youre gonna do synthetic, try the Mobil1 with silver cap which
are readily available anywhere. (4 bottles, about $5-6 each).
I use synthetic up to 10k miles or 1 year. first change from
dino oil, i change around 8k.

keep an extra bottle to top off, as needed. be sure to target
the center of the dipstick. better to have less oil than too much.
some dealers have newbs doing oil changes and go over the full
mark.

Sorry, I'm kind of ignorant to changing oil, but those 1L bottles should be enough for an oil change, right? I'm going to be purchasing Royal Purple 5W-20 and giving it to the dealer to change it.

I was a fan of factory oil since I'm a Spoon Sports fanboy and the President of Spoon says if you're just a weekend warrior with moderate modification to your vehicle, the factory oil is best.

I think Valvoline makes the Honda conventional oil and Mobile makes the Honda Synthetic. They are not the same as Mobile1, but very similar in additives.

Since I went FI I've been using Royal Purple.

1 liter = 1.06 quart...

so i think you need 4 bottles (5 bottles as you want to keep one
as spare).

Any name brand oil is going to work well for 4-5k miles
and ordinary driving.

It's only a concern if your are excessive in the long term care of
your car. Typically people will keep a car 3 years and then
the oil doesn't matter.

If you want to run 10k miles or more on the oil to save
money or help the environment, a synthetic
is absolutely necessary. The conventional oils may not last long
enough depending on conditions and climate, it's a chance.

But, my motivation to run amsoil is to save money.
At 1.5-2 mpg fuel savings, it saves me $300 per year on one car,
with 3 cars in the family it's important. This car will probably stay in the
family, get turned over to the kids, run many years through college
so I'm going to use amsoil in the civic.

The accords are leased and will get sold or turned in, so I only
use amsoil for the fuel savings.

I think your refering to a 1 gallon bottle, not a 1 liter. 1 gal = 4 quarts.

Well sounds like ill be the first ginnie(sp?) pig for this ->

5w30 Mobile 1 super syn extended performance oil(gold cap) and filter.

This line of oil just came out about a month or 2 ago. Its about $.70 more per quart than Mobile 1. Its rated at 15k miles between oil changes.

The filter was $10.99. It was a M1-110 filter. And lasts twice as long as the leading filter, it has a synthetic filtering element.

Why did I decide to go with this? Well, at work we use Mobile products so I see the effects of Mobile 1 oil(which i like). So I decided to try it once and see if the exta $.70/quart was worth it. If i dont think it is then ill just change my oil at work for free from now on w/ mobile 1.
As for the filter, I knew i needed a good filter for the high reving engine, and since it sees vtec alot.

Ill let everyone know how it goes with the mileage.
