electronics experts? - keyless entry/immobilizer

I've been trying to figure out how the keyless entry/immobilizer works on the new civic. Based on the FCC ID i've figured out that the fob is made by Valeo (a french company) and that it uses FSK. At first glance it looks like they use a single code assigned to the car - i.e. no rolling codes like on high end cars like Mercedes. However, I would like to find out more detail, mostly to determine whether the immobilizer functionality is worth a damn. After all, if it is only a single code then picking it up on a scanner and then cloning it shouldn't be a big deal. (just read http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.08/carkey.html)

I've taken pictures of the inside of my key, it looks like the heart of the system is the IC in the center. From the logo I believe that it's a Philips chip, but I've had no luck finding any details about it. Maybe someone here can help identify it.

lol...I love people like you. Take stuff apart just to see how it works. My cousin took his old Nintendo apart when he was 6 to see how it worked.

As far as the immobilizer, I've seen far fewer immobilizer-equipped Civic/RSX's on stolen lists than pre-immobilizer vehicles. Someone posted something about his key or his mom's key starting either his car or his car (forgot which one). As to whether it's worth it or not, well...Honda seems to think so. I'm reserving judgement.

yeah the foruma bout opening other people's cars is what got me going on this. I have some theories that I explained in there, but I would like to get to the bottom of this.

I agree that it's still harder to steal an immobilizer equipped car than one w/o it, but at the same time it may not be the panacea that the insurance companies think it is.
