Synthetic Oil

Hey, i just had a quick, nube question. I got my oil changed today, but instead of using the Honda conventional oil, i brought my own Mobile One Fully Synthetic 10w-30. My friend told me I shouldve just stuck with conventional but I've always heard synthetic was better for your car. What do you guys think and use in your Si?

Simply put, standard oil is for normal scheduled changes, synthetic is for extended mileage changes. It's a waste of your hard earned dollars to change synthetic at the time you would standard oil, synthetics advantage is prolonged viscosity breakdown.

Agreed, with the exception that synthetics help maintain a cleaner engine and resist extremes (pressure and temperature) alot better than conventionals.

But you still are throwing money away if you only use synthetics for 6000-7000 miles. I'm over 14,000 on my run of AMSOIL SSO 0w30 right now.

Of course, it's like $9 a quart....so it better extend my intervals :)

I don't know about Amsoil. I've visited BITOG a lot, and I feel Amsoil is overrated.

personally i got my best MPG with amsoil vs. Mobil 1 Synth. A drop from 29mpg with amsoil to 25 with Mobil 1. Same style driving. I'm switching back at the end of the month.

and I got my personal best MPG out of mobil 1

37.12 mpgs

I really don't see why you won't consider mobil 1 extended performance, why spend more on Amsoil ? The only proof of Amsoil being better than mobil 1 is through the Amsoil website.

I won't fall for that.

Mobil 1 synthetic since 1st oil change. I probably change it more often than I should, but I hate looking at that little wrench icon on my dash.

Nayilsi - How about oil analyses? Is that proof?

I did an oil analysis running AMSOIL TSO 0w30 for 9500 miles and it was sparkling. Now I'm running SSO 0w30 for 15k miles. I expect it to be sparkling as well.

The only way to say Mobil 1 EP is not as good would be to now run Mobil 1 EP for 15k miles and compare. But I don't want to do that to my baby.

She loves AMSOIL, Pennzoil Platinum and, of all things, Supertech 5w30 full synthetic. It's a tangible difference.

:)

Yes there are cases where Amsoil does great in oil analysis. So does mobil 1 EP and regular mobil 1.

However, none has been as consistent as PP though.

I'm not saying Amsoil is bad, I just don't see enough evidence to go for Amsoil instead of Mobil 1.

Expect possible decreases in fuel mileage due to that rated oil.

The only way to maintain a cleaner powerplant is frequent oil changes, synthetic oil gets just as dirty as conventional oil. Regarding breakdown, there really isn't any exception, resisting extremes is resisting viscosity breakdown.

Of course if one's running several trackdays a month with their daily driver then synthetic would be the way to go, however if joe bagadonuts is just VTECing the usual amount around town conventional lube will do just fine.

I hear dudes say they run synth all the time and change it out every 3K when all they do is drive back and forth to work, I just smile and say, "it's your money".

» The 3,000 Mile Oil Change Myth and Scam

Consumer Reports:

"Even in the severe driving conditions that a New York City taxi endures, we noted no benefit from changing the oil every 3,000 miles rather than every 6,000. If your driving falls into the “normal” service category, changing the oil every 7,500 miles (or at the automaker’s suggested intervals) should certainly provide adequate protection. (We recommend changing the oil filter with each oil change.)"

Below are examples of not "normal" driving.

-Driving less than 5 miles per trip, or in freezing temperatures, driving less than 10 miles per trip,
-Driving in extremely hot (over 90 degree) conditions,
-Used primarily as a delivery vehicle or taxi that is driven mostly in stop and go traffic and/or parked with the engine idling,
-Trailer towing, driving with a roof top carrier, or driving in mountainous conditions, or
-Driving on muddy, dusty, or de-iced roads.

I did use Mobil 1 Extended Performance. I think I may switch to Royal Purple to see how that runs.

I'd go with PP before even thinking about RP.
