Hood hot to the touch?

Hi, new to the forum here. I just purchased an '06 EX sedan AT. We are truly a Honda family now with an Odyssey, Civic, RL, and CL in the driveway as I type here. Anyway, my question is ... I drove the Civic a few miles, parked it, and came back 10 minutes later. The hood on the upper right and upper left about 10 inches below the window and just inside the seam is real hot (almost can't leave hand there). I felt the middle of the hood and it was barely warm. Can anyone tell me if this is common and what might cause so much heat in just two spots? What alarms me is if this gets this hot all the time, could this lead to premature paint failure there? Thanks for your help.

so if you were looking at the pic below - just on the outside edge was hot.... below the windshield...10 inches down. But the middle was not hot

the engine itself sits more to the left side of the engine bay if you're looking at it straight on.

Thanks webby, I was thinking of popping the hood to see what was directly underneath. From looking at your photo, the location I see it is not really above anything that is known to get real hot. Hope someone has the answer.

did it have anything to do with the heat outside.... sun reflecting off the windshield or something? I really woudln't be too concerned with the paint though. I know people who obviously leave their cars outside in year round heat, or temps of 100+ all summer long. Just keep the paint clean and you should be ok. I know my car at one point was outside in LA 24-7 and it was well over 100+ degrees for weeks on end in the summer.

I think it's also because the car warms up INSTANTANEOUSLY due to the fact that there is no exhaust manifold and it causes faster warm up of the catalytic converter and the engine.

With regard to civicwithnav's reply, I did consider that there might be something unique about the civic's exhaust system. It certainly appears that the engine compartment is very compact. I was not aware that the civic does without an exhaust manifold. Interesting ...

no exhaust manifold???

No exhaust manifold? can someone please tell me how that can be? I think someone is misinformed or is misinterpreting something as there HAS to be some type of exhaust manifold. As far as why the hood is hot...well, the engine runs at 200+ degrees (at least the coolant within) and the whole thing suffers from heat soak when the engine is stopped meaning the coolant stops circulating and the whole 300 pound mass of metal that makes up the engine and all accessories simply gets HOT until it cools naturally. Remember combustion temps can be over 900 degrees and the cat. is more than that so you might ask..what happens to all that heat? It fills the engine compartment and by default the hood and surrounding areas to include front fender tops.

it is casted together with the engine's head. then it goes straight into the catalytic converter.

The paint won't fail at these temperatures. The paint on the car was originally baked on.
