Si engine clattering sound 3600 - 4500 RPM

I have a 2006 Si with 5,200 miles on it and notice, when the window is rolled up and A/C is off, that the engine makes a clattering sound starting at 3600 RPM and seeming to cut out at 4500 RPM. Doesn't matter what gear it is in, but the noise is most pronounced in 3rd and 4th gears when the car is warmed up.

I do not mind the noise much, but am only concerned that there is nothing wrong with the engine.

Anybody have ideas about what the cause of the noise is, and whether this is normal?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Sounds scary, I would take it into the dealer.

Been driving and listening to the sound, it is fairly subtle. I am thinking this is normal, but that I did not hear it before because I went through the RPM range with brisk accelerations.

Hi - no, this sound can be heard when I accelerate very slowly in 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th gear between 2600-4400 RPM. Gotta listen closely for the sound (no AC, windows up, moonroof closed, no radio).

go to the dealer asap, or try to get a video up so we can hear it too.

Are using 91 octane or higher? If you are using regular, what you may be hearing is valve ping.

Thumbs up

There are several threads on the TOV forum about this. The general concensus was that it was the timing chain rattling under high rpms and was completely normal. More than thirty people posted, replying that they too had the rattling sound, so it eases my mind.

For the durability of a timing chain, I'm willing to deal with a little rattle.

Thanks, good to know. The noise is not always there, and is pretty subtle. Only happens when the car is in gear - I can rev the engine in neutral and all is good. My neighbors probably don't enjoy hearing the engine screaming at night, but some of them have Harley's, so I figure that fair is fair:)

I like the sound of the acutal engine in this car more than almost anything but a c6 z06 or a ferrari or somthing of that nature. Its not a camary as far as quietness goes but their should never be a METALIC sound coming from the motor ever. as long as its not metaly i wouldnt worry too much.
