Replacement windshield: Cots & Brands...

So a few months ago I was driving down the highway when a Nissan Murano threw what must have been a sizable rock into my windshield consequently chipping it quite severely. I had it fixed immediately, but just last week I noticed a 1cm crack starting to creep out from the site. 2 days later I had a two foot crack across my windshield and it's growing. My 1000$, non waiveable, deductible means my insurance will be no help (even though they paid for the initial repair at no expense to me).

The glass shop (Lebeau, which is supposed to be quite reputable in Quebec) charges 900$ to replace the windshield. The dealer only charges 480$ for the same replacement job and a tinted line at the top is no extra charge.

Oddly enough, neither use genuine Honda glass. The dealer says they subcontract the installation (the guy comes to their shop) and use NAG glass. Lebeau tried to tell me that they don't use genuine Honda glass, but that they don't use aftermarket glass either. Whatever that means.

The original Honda glass is PPG Solargreen as per the label at the bottom on the driver's side, but I can't find a company called NAG that makes windshields. Anybody know what NAG means?

So should I worry about the dealer not using genuine Honda glass? Is a NAG windshield as good as the PPG (I don't want the thing to be noisy, leak or break more easily)? Can I get a genuine PPG windshield without the Honda label for less?

If there's anything I should know or ask about before going ahead with the replacement, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Pretty much when it comes to a windshield it has to meet certain standards for clarity and distortion. With Nags glass (speedy, aftermarket glass) it is not always perfectly shaped and is like any other non OEM body part, not quite perfect. With the windshield I think you will be fine with Nags. Leaks and stuff should be covered by the installer. It's your side glass where you will actually see a difference. It is more wavy and sometimes when you have power windows you can hear the motor working hard to try and push it up because of the wrong shape. I am not sure what the Nags actually means either but it is basically just saying some dude made this cheaper and I'm gonna put it on your car. I broke a windshield on a car I was fixing once (long story anyone could have done it) and we put a nags glass in it and it was fine. Customer was happy and it was half the price of OEM. Side glass go OEM if you are picky and don't wanna chance a window motor.

NAGS stands for National Auto Glass Specifications. NAGS assigns a part number to every glass part in the automotive industry that is recognized by glass manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and insurance companies. NAGS also provides a numbering system to identify the location and type of a windshield repair on a particular windshield, although the NAGS windshield repair part number concept has not been universally adopted.

I just had this done to my car on friday. Had it done in canada at speedy glass and they used a pilkington windshield. i have a 0$ deductable on my insurance so it saved me $686 (cost of windshield plus install)

ONLY difference from this windshield to OEM is that it doesnt say honda in the lower driver side corner.

I went with aftermarked glass becuase i belive honda uses SHITTY GLASS.

3 broken foglights and a cracked windhield with less then 10,000k. I truly believe ANY glass on the 06-08 civics to be of subpar quality. Chips/cracks way too easily.

I belive aftermarket glass to be of better quality.

The factory glass is wavy and ugly anyway. If you want the Honda glass just order the windshield from the parts dept. Their windshield guy will put in any windshield you want. It's just going to cost you more. If your dealership doesn't want to do this just go somewhere else. Or order the factory glass and get any other shop to install it.

Honda makes 0 windshields for their vehicles. They buy them from the lowest bidder on a contract (in this case PPG), just like the majority of parts on any car from any new car manufacturer.

The moral of the story here is you can buy an OE Honda PPG windshield for major dollars, or you can buy an aftermarket PPG windshield that is the same as the Honda glass less the Honda emblem on it for much less. The choice is yours.

I've had numerous windshields replaced over the past 30 some years, I've always specified PPG and have never had any issues.
