Rough Shifting / light crunch through the gear movements.

Guys, i picked up my silver 06 SI in March, since then i have had a little roughness in the movement of the gear shift, into second, third and 5th. I think it might be something to do with syncros. I have to wait a second before the revs drop due to the tendency of the electric throttle to hold on to its revs. This is my first standard car so maybe i am doing something wrong.

Anyone , Everyone .... some suggestions please.

Thanks,

Make sure you're pressing the clutch ALL the way in. If you still have that notchy feeling while shifting, try shifting with a different motion of your hand.

You don't need to wait for the revs to drop before you press the clutch in and shift either. Just let off the gas, clutch in, and shift. Don't worry about the revs hanging.

take it in for warranty work, that shouldnt be happening. synthetic oil could possibly make it worse, all depends on whats wrong. you may even be low on fluid...any leaks?

take it to the dealer and good luck. My dealer told me my S2000 was acting normally when I complained about that. I traded the car before i ever resolved it. It was an inconvenience to me. But I would've eventually gotten it fixed had I kept th car.

Shifting too early?

Sup ADewan,

I had the same problem and we happen to have the same color and car also.. :) I have a new silver si and it's my first standard tranny. But I think your problem is that you are shifting too early. It was happening to me. If I shift below 5000rpm, The car would jerk a bit. Try shifting at or after 5000rpm. I got smoother shifts after that. Hope that helps..

clutch???

Hmmm, i'll try that. but i can't imagine always shifting at 5000rpm can be good for an engine, most cars redline at 6000rpm. Somehow i have a feeling its got something to do with either clutch or syncro mechenism. maybe the cluch isn't disengaging all the way?? But its been doing that since day 1. when i picked up the car it had 260kms on it from test drives . i bought it cus i didn't want to wait 3 months for it.

If you can't shift in an 8000rpm car at 5000rpm, what's the poitn of having it rev that high? I just wouldn't continuously take it up to 8k.

When you're talking about crunchiness, what do you mean? Does it take a bit of a rough track when pushing it in? If so, I have that too...got rid of most of it when I got a heavier shift knob.

yeah, just roughness while moving the shifter while the clutch is pressed all the way down.

i seem to have this roughness when pushing into 2nd gear and a little on 4th gear...

It is not like a grind from the transmission just a little resistance and crunch feeling in the shifter. I only have 800km on the car.

I am very sure i push the clutch all the way in.. only seems to crunch when i shift from 1st to 2nd at 3000rpm and up...

i was told it was due to the cable shift linkage in our si's. i tried a heavier shift knob and it helped but it hurt my hand (the way i held the shifter).

i will complain about it (again) on my next oil change.

What are the different kinds of linkages? Could someone explain in some detail?

Thanks.

you copy and pasted the same exact impossible-to-read response in two threads...?

edit - THREE threads you post the same exact story...ummm. ok.

you MIGHT get a more thorough response if you can give better detail...e.g. car is hot/cold, which gears, you're sure your clutch is in all the way before engaging a gear, slowing down...

But if you really think it's getting worse, I'd probably take it to the dealer and then post back here what your experience was. I didn't get much help w/ my S2000 but it never got so bad that I made it a priority to ruin the service guy's day with a blistering phone call. either way, keep us posted. I think it's good that those of us who have had or are having gearbox issues should continue to bring this up and find a resolution that really works.

Agreed, this would be a useful thread if we found out the problem.

My car does it all the time, whether the engine is hot or cold, and im pushing the clutch in all the way. (i remember seeing some thread on here where someone moved the engage point of the clutch up and it fixed his crunching) The problem just seems to be that its crunching between gears and just not flowing through the gears like when it was new.

Im taking it to the dealer on Tues. so ill keep you updated

I had that problem before, most noticeably when shifting into third. All I did was change my shifting style and that helped out a bunch. Now I ease the shifter into position without much force, when done right it feels like the shifter is being sucked into gear. I still shift just as quick, but lighter. I still get a little crunching here and there when I'm in a rush, but not when I'm doing this.
