License Plate Fitment

Okay, so this is really bugging me.

I just got my license plate in the mail (Michigan license plate, that's where my family lives), and the damn plate won't fit.

I can't screw more than one row of the two rows of screws in. Let me rephrase:

I can only screw the top two screws in, or the bottom two screws in, because the opposite row won't fit if I screw the others in.

Does this make sense to anyone?

I called the dealer I bought it from, and he said the bottom two screw holes are adjustable, but I think I'm calling bullshit, because my two bottom screw holes definately don't allow for me to put the screws in if I've already screwed the top two in.

I feel so stupid.

I've owned about 15 cars in my life and I don't ever recall using more than 2 screws

My plates fit with all four screwed in (well, the front plate is off, and those screws needed to be used!). I just screwed it in a thread so there's movement, then moved it around until I got them all into their holes.

There's at least a good quarter of an inch between the holes lining up.

Ouch! Well, you typically don't need FOUR screws in. I'll admit it looks better though...

If you want to...why not just put some caps on there, and fit them on without screws?

I'm just curious as to why it doesn't fit. It fits on every other car my family owns.

Maybe you need to loosen the top two screws a little bit to get the bottom ones started and go from there.

Are they shaped differently or something? That's odd.

What the hell, Michigan.

My mom checked a few older license plates. Holes matched on one, and didn't on the other.

The guy at the deaelrship I bought it from said, "The bottom clips move up and down".

Mine definately don't.

My guess is that the holes in the plates aren't placed evenly.

I always use 4 screws to mount my license plates. I put in one top screw loosely, then the opposite corner bottom screw. Then I put in the other two, and once all of them are started, I tighten them all up.

Are you talking about both the front and the back? You could try a license plate cover instead of a frame, push come to shove. I know that you don't need more then two screws, but personally if it only takes two nails to secure something I wind up using six.

I'm talking about rear. Michigan doesn't require front plates.

I should've clarified, sorry.

You'd think Michigan plates, coming from Michigan, would be the best fitting :P.

The Si comes from Canada...maybe Canada uses a different spacing? :gaygiggle I'll check mine at break time, around 2:30. I know I took the dealer frame off but don't remember how many screws I put back

ok well I looked and I have 4 screws and the only adjustments I see are the oval holes in the plate and they're not even. I would think maybe when they made your plate they put holes are in the wrong spot..can you match it up to an old plate?

Yes, one of my mom's old plates matches up pretty closely, but then another older plate, they are off by enough to be able to miss the hole

I was putting in some license plate covers I picked today. I noticed in the back where the license plate mounts, "something" looks adjustable, my guess is the top screw placement IS adjustable. I didn't mess with the two plastic adjustable pieces because the holes are correctly spaced, and I wouldn't stake my life on it, but I think the dealer was telling you the truth. Why would you have two adjustable white plastic pieces directly behind the license plate. Any brave Michigan souls willing to test my theory?

Are you talking about the bottom two screw holes, or the top most screw holes by the trunk lid?
