I have the the clunk noise coming from the right front of my car. It only happens when going over certain bumps while on side streets. I never notice or hear the clunk while on the freeway. I've poked around to see if I could figure out what it is but haven't been able to find what is causing it. It is more than just a rattle. A couple of people on the Edmunds forums mentioned they have the same issue. One guy brought his car in and the dealer replaced a strut but the noise continues. Has anyone had this clunk noise successfully fixed by their dealer? What was the cause of the problem? I will bring this to the attention of my dealer when I bring it in for my 1st oil change.
I'm not sure if this efects the USA civic or not. i'm in Asia and I've had this same problem since the car was new. The problem has been tracked down to the hydrolic engine mount. It was changed with a new design mount, but made a different clunck sound. Honda know of this problem, but as of yet Honda still has no fix.
I had earlier reported this clunking sound to the dealership when I sent my 1.8 in for the 1,000km service. At that time, their reply to me was they have reported the problem to Honda Malaysia for investigation. Since then, I've not heard back...
....until I found out about the engine mount problem in the above thread. I took my car back to the dealership's workshop yesterday requesting that they replace the defective part.
This time, I got the reply: "Honda Malaysia does not yet have a conter-measure component to solve the problem". Apparently, when Honda Malaysia has a solution, they'll make a staggered recall of the cars.
For those 'new' to the problem, the sound is best replicated when travelling approx 20-30 kph going over a shallow trench; the down and up motion at around 25 kph just brings the chassis up while the engine is moving down and 'clunk'.
I hope Honda Malaysia will source the solution quickly!
"Clunk" or a click? I am ready to take in my Civic Sedan for the 3rd time for this clicking noise I'm getting in the right front. They haven't "noticed it" the first two, and are insisting I take a day off of work so I can do a road test with a technician. My sound sounds like a hard drive clicking constantly when going over minor bumps.
It's most likely a broken engine mount, atleast thats what Honda fixed when I brought mines in. I think the reason Honda doesn't say anything is that they don't want to do a recall, so instead, they're just letting everyone deal with it until it annoys them, and those people bring it into fix. Everyone else can apparently "live with it" If thats what they're really doing, this is a shitty tactic to save face.
Reason Honda hasn't done anything is probably because they're busy redesigning a motor mount to fix the problems (as was mentioned above)...there seem to be more issues with the mount than just failures. I'm hoping for the same type of TSB (it won't be a recall) as the 04 Accords...so it gets rid of the rough idle
before i had the motor mount (passenger side) replaced, i use to get one
'clunk' sound over larger bumps. it wasn't a rattling...more of a single hit
muffled metal to metal noise.
my first post, just wanted to thank all of u very much i've been 2 the dealership 3 times with "the clunk" with no help because I couldn't duplicate it. now thanks to all of you I'm headin back to the dealership with demands of getting it fixed. this site rocks!
I just had the engine mount replaced, but the clunk noise still persists. Is the noise due to the strut or the engine mount?? The technician told me that the strut looks okay. can anyone here identify the source of the noise? And why the struct is making that kind of noise?

just a follow up update- my car is fixed.
had both struts replaced, right motor mount replaced as well.
Ok guys, actually an update. A couple of weeks ago, i took the civic in and replaced the motor mount. The sound is still there -_- It's not the same sound though, it sounds like something is loose in the door. Either way, this is a lil annoying. I'll take it in again if i find anymore problems.
This seems like a never-ending issue for my EX! I have been to the dealership 6 times for the same noise. They replaced both front shocks and it still has the proplem with turning, either left or right or when you hit a bump. I tried to explain about the motor mount scenario and they claim the Honda US, has no recolection of this issue! I wish they would just replace the whole suspension, but they won't do it.. All the guarantee work has to go through Honda Corp. Germany. And they have a tight grasp on what can and can't be done. Too much politics there... So now I have three unresolved issues, wind noise on both sides over 100 K\mh, rust on the motor and the right front suspension noise... Other than that, the car is fine!
guys, same thing on mine. **** this pisses me off!!
the noise is back again on the right front over larger bumps.
the clunk is like the noise the a/c compressor makes when
turning on/off. it's a metal to metal type noise. im not sure
if it's the struts or the motor mounts again. i think it's the
motor mount or something completely else.
I have a 06 coupe and had the same noise coming from the driver's front. I had to take it 3 times and finally tell them to replace the strut. Finally it was replaced and I have another 3500 miles on it with out any noise.
Same clunk noise on my CIVIC 2.0S....... Honda Taiwan said new engine mounts will be imported from Japan in October and they believed that there's not an effective solution to solve the clunk issue until then.

I got new engine mounts already, it doesn't solve the problem. When they get the reflash done for the transmission, i'll go back n get that fixed also.
dunno if this is new news but I just went to the dealership to have a similar clunk looked at and they said there's a new bulletin for engine mounts for '06 civics. (edit, I'm in Canada)
What does it say in the new bulletin?
Does it provide any solution?
