I'm in for an answer because I'm not positive. From what I understand the Maintenance minder is smart enough to still be accurate after the switch to synthetic.

the maintenance is not a sensor in the tank that is designated to "know" what kind of oil you are using

it is a calculator that gives an estimate of oil life by a number of factors including hot runs, starts, run time

the maintenance will not know if you are running synthetic, my rule is follow the super expensive calculator and skip the "extended life" hype

Castrol Syntec - Still every 5K.

Too may horror stories, I espically love the One Year/15k Amsoil. Then can't figure out why its pushing blue smoke out the back with less then 60k on the clock.

We've already replaced 2 R18's from lack of maintaince.

Only way to tell for sure is to get it tested (that's what I'm doing)

Blackstone Laboratories - Gas Engines

After I get the factory fill out I'm going to sample @ 3k and 15% to see if for my driving conditions (cold winters & short trips) the oil will hold up.

when I asked this question at a local oil change place, I was told it would not be the oil that would fail first, it would be the filter. So they want you to still follow the recommended MM schedule.

I don't get why people have to muck around with this.
Honda made it pretty simple. When the maintenance minder gets down to 15% oil life, you go have an oil change. I mean how difficult is this?

Synthetic Oil, Mobil 1

For what it is worth, a friend is a Petrolium Salesman and I consider him to be 'very' knowledgeable on the subject. ( His company does NOT sell Mobil products). When I told him I was using Mobil 1 and still changing my oil & filter every 3-5000 miles as I did with the non synthetic, he said I was "wasting my money".

He said,"there is NOT anything that car COULD POSSIBLY do to hurt that oil" !

"He would not change it for 10,000 miles minimum !"

" If you really insist on doing something, change the Oil Filter at 5,000 miles and refill as needed and then run it to 10,000 miles, then change oil & filter.

I just switched over to Mobil 1 on this car (08 Civic EX) at the last oil change (wanted to break-in motor first / old fashioned) so have not set a procedure yet. I think I am going to change it at 5,000 miles the first time, and take a sample to him for analysis. Depending on the results of it, I will make a determination for future oil change intervals.
