Lightbulb yellow transparent plexiglass foglights (unsafe for 56K)

well i finally got the time to get yellow transparent plexiglass cutouts for me. material was cheap but labour to get it done was expensive.

reason i got this done was because i've had 2 sets of fogs crack/break on me. so i got tired of this and decided to get plexiglass cutouts instead. plexiglass is 1/8" thick so wont break easily but could still bend to the contours of the curved fogs.

getting the glass out of there wasnt hard, just used a hair dryer to heat up the silicone. the hard part was beading new silicone in there because i tried twice and it was too much and could be seen from the inside of the foglight. finally the third time got it closest to being the way i want it. it was pain to get the silicone off of the plexiglass though.

while i was at it, since i had to take the bumper off, i figured i should put on my JDM emblems on too. probably the best time to do it as its gonna rain in a couple days so that lets the adhesives time to dry.

oh and sorry if the car is dirty, the rain will clean that soon.

took out the shrouds from the OEM fogs...

1/8" thick...thats what she said...

mmm, JDM goodness...

new and improved Stanley fogs...

get out old H...

test fit and my camera bag...

enjoy...all pics taken with the "nifty fifty".

very nice

I'm definitely considering doing this, but with clear Plexiglass.

I have another set of cheapy ebay fogs in my closet that I'm going to use when I get my projectors and install them. Then, while I have the OEM fogs out, I'll do the DIY. And then, some months down the road when the ebay fogs are cracked and all done for. I'll switch them out! :)

Where did you get them cut?

got it cut locally. a sign shop might be able to do it. it all depends if they have the tools to do the job.

thanks guys.

the DRLs/HIs are Nokya yellows.

i got the plexiglass from the same local shop that did the cutouts. check your phonebooks for sign shops that have plexiglass or google it, like i did.

after driving tonight, i've gotta lower the height of the fogs, too high. mind you, nobody has flashed their headlights at me.

another thing is the cutoff is pretty good for halogen, even better than the glass i had before.

Good show! I may end up doing this if (when?) my fogs get cracked.

do it now. you should see the pics of my retros where i have a pic of one the cracked fogs, its really dirty inside the chrome housing. so if you dont feel like like cleaning the inside of it and potentially messing up the chrome do it sooner.

What effect did removing the shrouds have on the light output?

How are they holding up? People usually use lexan, I see that you used plexiglass.

Btw, nice...

removing the shrouds helps with reflecting the light on the chrome. with the shrouds over the bulbs the light would be concentrating to a point where they would most likely melt the plexiglass.

the plexiglass is holding up fine. in the event they burn or melt then i'll go with lexan.

so far so good though.

My prob is that I don't have any tools to cut the plexiglass, so the easiest thing for me would be to take a template to somewhere where they can sell it and cut it for me.
Hmm, anyone with a template? :)

Xenin, how does the actualy beam differ without the shroud? As in, if you aimed it at a wall, how did it look before, how does it look now?

you can take the fog to where ever you'll get the plexiglass cut. they'll just trace the contour and make it a few mm smaller to fit the housing.

you can trace it yourself if you want as well.

any good sign shop can do the cutting for you. you should also be able to use a dremel if you want to do it yourself.

the plexiglass was cheap, like $5. the labour to get it done, that was expensive as i dont have tools or a dremel to do it myself.

i'll try and take some pics over the weekend to show how it looks. i've got some older pics of when i had the OEM fogs before i changed them so i would make a good comparison.

process to do this is just like opening headlights. use a heat gun or stick them in the over to heat up the silicone and pop the glass out. you can also just break the glass and pull the pieces out if you need to relieve some stress, lol.
