clearing your headlights...legal???

I have been looking at clearing or getting rid of the amber in my EX's headlight assemblies. Is this legal??? Does the amber portion of the light act as a "side marker" light which is required my federal dot rules or regulations???

I guess I'm looking for someone to tell me what the law is??? I could clear them and then put in a chrome amber bulb, which is basically invisible until lit up. Would that meet the regulations?? I used chrome amber bulbs on my rear turn signal bulbs and it looks neat. I would hate to clear the assemblies and then get in trouble, and then have to try to put the amber film back in or worse yet have to buy new housings.

I am old enough to remember when the fed govt first required side marker lights, so the manufacturers simply added little lights fore and aft on their existing bodies. But as time went by the manufacturers used a "wrap" around style of light to incorporate 2 functions into one light housing. anyone know what the exact law is???? thanks

The only legalities you need to worry about are bulb color and reflector. I also used the chrome amber bulbs to stay legal but I removed the side reflector in the front thus making it illegal. I'll see what happens when inspection time comes around. I've been pulled over twice for other stuff and he never mentioned my tint let alone a reflector

So removal of the amber reflector makes it illegal even with a chome amber bulb....... I think I'll just leave it alone, leave it factory.

Unless he or she is just a prick or having a bad day, most cops won't pull you over for just clear headlights. They'd have to pull you over for something else, and even then very, very, very few people get ticketed for not having amber signals. I think Sylvania makes bulbs that look clear, but give off an amber glow. Those should be fine if you want to clear your headlights.

.

True but you must also have a reflector both front and back. That is for all states. Doesn't matter if it's white or amber but it's the law. Since they don't make the white or clear. I removed it all together

That's what I was trying to get at, but a half hour of sleep doesn't bode well for me

I prefer that look. If I were keeping the stockers, I'd do the same thing.
