The relay harness is unnecessary

The 8th Generation Civic's lighting wiring is more than capable of supporting the demands of this HID retrofit kit.

The relay wiring harness is not necessary!

However, if security blankets, and monsters under the bed are a part of ones life, then by all means, install the relay. Being scared of the unknown is the american way!

My friend helped my cousin install these on his car. We couldnt get the bulbs in properly and instead of loosening the screws, he just used a dremmel and shaved down the edges to have it fit properly. Also, as stated before the relay are not needed

Yes, and for those who don't want to use the relay, more power to you! I did the relay since it took only a few minutes longer for the added safety.

Actually I would say that it's the proper home mechanics way of doing it the best way possible. Or, the OCD persons way. :-)

I must a fool then because when did my last two cars I used two relays each fused independantly, One for the left and one for the right. My thinking is that if the relay fails or the fuse blows on either headlight, I still have the other headlight operating till I get home and can check the circuits.

You probably are, or at the very least you did not prepare very well by researching you car's electrical system.

Modern cars, including the Civic are not only fused for the main lighting circuit, but each individual lamp wiring leg is redundantly fused for exactly the reason that you state.

You simply duplicated something that was already there.

Your owners manual can be very enlightening reading, if you choose to do it.

Great write up, this is the guide I used to figure out how to put my HID's in a few months ago.

Only thing different is, I placed my ballast on a bar that has a hole in it (which seems like it was perfectly made for mounting a ballast to) seen in this picture. This spot is exactly the same on both sides of the car and my kit came with a mounting bracket that allowed me to screw it to this hole.

Mine also upon turning on, draws 7.5A for the first 3 seconds, then at only 3A while running. I know this is what the modexpress company just says, and I have not tested this to prove it, but this is why my kit does not need an upgraded harness as well (but I suppose this could all be a lie).

the relay only comes with one 9006 connector.

i guess i'll go with the driver side too, or whatever is convenient.

for the 9000th time.....

The HID retrofit relay harness is not necessary for an 8th Generation Civic. Now go to your room, and write that 50 times!

There was a guy on another forum where his ballast went poop drawing 40 amps. He kept blowing his relay but then someone told him to hook it up directly to the oem female 9006 connector because he said "OMFG our cars are designed to withstand the current u dont need a relay you're dumb for the 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000th time u dont need it dont be dumb" and guess what? He fried his stock harness. Later after some testing his ballast was drawing 40amps.
A relay harness is not necessary but for safety precautions it is highly recommended.

Sorry, this sounds like another urban legend, and is most likely not true. Here is why. Each headlight wiring leg circuit (left low beam, left high beam, etc.) is fused separately with a 10 amp fuse. In addition, the entire wiring circuit, is fused at 20 amps. If a Ballast does short out and goes into a high current draw mode, the leg fuse will blow long before the wires are damaged. In 99 out 100 ballast failures, the ballast simply stops working. In the rare case that it does short out, if it is properly fused, then the fuse will simply blow.

The stock wiring harness is in-fact superior to an add-on relay harness, because of redundant fusing, and the conservative way that each light is fused independently.

9 out of 10 times a reported foul-up is directly attributable to the person who modified their car incorrectly.
