So, I'm not happy with the stock DRL like a lot of you, but I still want to keep the function and not just pull the fuse.
Has anyone modified their high beam reflectors with an additional light? I'm thinking a good LED aimed back at the reflector would suffice, and give more flexibility in colour.
Only thing that has me stumped is how to keep high beam function and still power my additional light so it will act like the regular DRL. A 10Hz 9v source isn't very useful...
well my homie got one of those aftermarket kits that use the turn signals as the drls just like what gm uses in their newer vehicles like the cobalts and the corvettes..... looks pretty sicc to me. he also got a harness that connects to the stock drl's and runs to the drl unit and it keeps off his stock drls. ill have to get the info from here and let u kno the manufacturer nd price
I plan on pulling the fuse for the DRL and just doing one click of the switch to turn on the side corner lights... I have yet to do this though.
I too am very disappointed with the DRL's... they look like junk. I was gonna get some yellow bulbs to have yellow DRL's but I think that'll end up being more of a PITA than it's worth.... I liked how my 93 prelude looked with just the side lights lit up so I think that's the look I'm gonna go for with my Si.
I do like your idea of putting a better DRL in there... like the 5th gen prelude... those have pretty sweet running lights.
And to the guy who said they haven't been called parking lights since the 90's get a life.
I'm currently working on a circuit to separate the DRL and high-beam signals into two wires (from the one wire they both currently run on). But what SLICK_iVTEC mentioned sounds very similar and already put together, i.e. easier
Now that's more like what I'm talking about!
Where does the voltage get dropped/pulsed for the DRL operation? I'm guessing you could just run a new wire from there to keep everything nice and separate.
Hmm not sure... I assume it's in the MICU where I don't want to touch it. The circuit I'm working on is a voltage comparator using approximately a 10V threshold. (The DRL is just a low-voltage version of the high-beam.) It works, but I just need to add in a relay and tweak things a bit. I just finished a quad-retro (which deleted the DRL), so I also plan on using the ambers as the DRL, but the circuit could equally be used for what you're describing.
Btw, I believe the 06-09 Acura CSX also has the lights you're talking about.
Okay, I can see that... clever. now I haven't been out there with a multimeter which I guess I should, but somewhere else I read it was a pulsed 9v signal for the daytime lights, is that correct?
I don't know know if it's pulsed or not... I guess it could be, just with enough of a duty cycle to give it the 9V or so.
I can't really take credit for the clever-ness though... a friend at work who's also an electrical engineer is doing most of the thinking/work. I'm just along for the ride, trying to learn a thing or two
Yea its the very top right under your dashboard, its a pain in the ass to remove, and I used a pair of tweezers. definately # 37 i did it the other day.
lol i was struggling pulling out my fuse for fogs then
my friend goes under the hood whips that out and
is like this would be helpful.
