Hey guys! I finally saved up $5,000 and this weekend I'm putting a down payment on a 2008 Civic Lx Coupe (thank you for many of you persuading me to get the two door). All this waiting and saving has been taking much of my life but I finally did it and soon I can step in the door of 8thcivic as a real member. So I was wondering, anything I should expect or prepare myself for when I get to the dealership? Any tips and tricks from you advanced buyers out there? Should I wear a tie? Sorry, kinda excited! Thanks you guys!

If/when you find a car that you like and sit down to start negotating they are going to ask you the magic question.....If I can get you a good price that we both can agree on, are you willing to do business today? That is the magic question that alot of people mess themselves up on. The correct answer is tell the truth if you are or not willing to buy right there. If you say no and think you can bluff them..your wrong because they are not going to take you as a serious buyer. They will through some stupid price in your face and say well come back when your ready to do business. If you say yes then ah ha..all of a sudden your taken seriously and the price starts to fall cause they now have the opportunity to move the car today..just look at it as a game.

Do a test drive in some other place, leave. Go to preferred dealer, give them a quote right away for the color you want(invoice if not less) , take EDMUNDS printouts, and do not budge. Since your in Long beach, tell them "dont make me drive to someotherpartofLAhondadealer"

Congrats on saving and doing it yourself!
Do as others say and don't buy the day you go in. Take in a folder with Edmunds.com printout of invoice and let them know you know what MSRP is. Remember, theres thousands of dealerships, only one WiseGuyLX and they all want you to buy from them. Also, no matter what they say, they're lying.

Wow, I honestly had no idea where to move this thread to. It's not offtopic, but it's not quite an introduction. Oh well, moved to introduction and pictures anyways. :shrugs:
As for advice, I would say push for a higher model and act as if you're settling for a lower model and try to get a good deal for it anyways. Worst case scenario you get a better car than you thought you were gonna get, best case they give you a kick ace deal on the car that you want because they think that you don't really want it. I'll be the first to admit that the advice that's already been given in this thread is better than this advice, but at the same time the more the marrier, right?

Thanks very much for the input! I actually didn't know where to post this either but thanks for fixing that for me, much appreciated. Okay, I really like the edmunds idea but I have a question. That True Market Value price is what I need to keep in mind and keep in the folder for me right? I was planning on getting e-mail and telephone quotes from maybe 3 dealers here and see if I can get them to drop their price a little. Might this be a good idea? The most I want to spend is 17,500 ($5000 down with hopefully max $250/mo). Can this be done? Thanks again! I'll snap some pics when I get it!

Definitely bring someone else with you, they may catch things like financing mistakes that you will not. Also decide how much you're willing to pay. You may even want to go Certified Used because when buying a new car it depreciates so much. Buying the used car say a 2007, the car has already depreciated alot since new so you want be losing as much. Haggle with wihe dealer to his lowest price. Then walk away and say you'll think about it and that you want to check out some other dealerships. Don't let them know that you want the Civic, tell him you're looking at other cars from Toyota or Ford. He may just break a great deal with you just as you're leaving.
