I was using that photomatix and made a picture, but the stupid program stamps a big logo onto your picture...

basically an image composed to at least a few images of the same scene but with different exposure levels. you merge them and tonemap to create the effects of a much wider dynamic range.

well, im no master but generally, the more pictures the better. -3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, + 3 EV should give you a decent image. the hard part will be keeping the camera in the same position since most camera's probably don't go beyond 3 images.

For you, the D40(x) doesnt have this feature so you'll have to put it on a tripod and adjust the EV as you go. When you're done, open up Photomatix and hit Ctrl + G or click on HDR > Generate. Then click Browse and load up all 6 (or # of) images at once and then click Okay. New window pops up I usually tick align images and click OK. then wait. might take a few minutes.

The picture will look pretty bad at first but don't worry. Click on HDR then Tone Mapping (Ctrl + T) The preview you see there is how the final image will look like when it's saved. So, adjust it to your liking but don't overdo it. I usually fix up the settings so it has the best balance between the amount of halo-ing and dynamic range. I don't bother with the "Tone Compressor" options at all. Click Apply and wait again. then save the image.

Personally, I take the image to photoshop and adjust it, levels, brightness, contrast etc.. some people may like the picture out of Photomatix and don't bother so yea, you choose. but that is basically it. Remember, the more images (in different EV's) the better

Not a car picture, but heres my first HDRI that turned out well.

I was going for that hyper-realistic almost painting look.
