Redline Time Attack – St. Louis, MO. - Our trip and coverage -

Redline Time Attack – St. Louis, MO. – Gateway International Racecourse:

GT Motoring is currently running 2 cars in Time Attack Competition. A 2005 AP2 S2000 and a 2003 DC5 Acura RSX type S. Both cars are currently prepped to meet the rules and regulations for both the Redline series, as well as the Super Street series. Both cars are currently also supported by J's Racing Japan

This event in St. Louis, was the first in our region for the season. We got our start on the drive from Chicago late on Friday, about 10pm. We knew we were in for a rough night behind the wheel, as both cars were being driven to the event. As out eye lid grew heavy we stopped to take a breather, and stretch our legs and grab some caffeine and snacks to get us through the rest of the drive. We arrive at the Hampton Inn in Collinsville, IL, few miles from the track at about 330am. We are greeted by the night counter guy who I can best describe as Lerch from the Addams Family. This guy has to duck a few inches for any door way!

As we woke up to a steaming sauna of St. Louis weather at the fine hour of 7am we quickly realized that 3 hours of sleep sucks. I think Mike and I both felt sick for the first 3-4 hours. After a brief drivers meeting and slamming of fluids including Red Bull and Full Throttle we were ready to take to the track for our first mornings practice session.

The S2000 had just had a number of new changes: J’s Racing 6 pot calipers with 2 piece rotors, new offset 17x9 +40 RE30 volks on new Bridgestone RE01R 245/40/17 tires, New camber adjustments, roll centers, modified GT wing height, and new GT trunk slip spoiler. I was optimistic that many of these new additions and changes would help the car greatly, where it had suffered slightly before. My initial impressions of the brakes, WOW. So much better initial bite, better pedal feel, and absolutely no fade during the session. I do recommend an aggressive rear pad to help balance the car some in hard braking. The J’s GT wing, I had added about 3inches of height via some carbon extensions I made for the mount posts. This came recommended from some successful racers that have been testing aero for some time on their S2k. The Bridgestone RE01R tires were GREAT. Even while a little over inflated on the first run, they still remained consistent throughout the 20min session. The next session, I would have taken out about 3 lbs to be at about 27-28 psi cold. Unfortunately, during the end of the session, a bearing went out on the rear differential, causing a minor fluid leak. This caused me to have to pull off track, and retire the S2000 for the day.

The RSX (DC5) was coming off of some good times and good feedback from the week before. Pretty much nothing had been changed except for tire temps and basic maintenance. Recent additions to the car were the J’s Racing aero kit, Bridgestone RE01R, and Cobalt racing pads. I had a chance to take the car out Sunday during some practice sessions, and the car is jus SET right now I think. Not a lot I would change at this point. =0) Mike Ostby, owner/driver of the DC5, clocked some awesome times in mornings cooler practice and was able to beat his previous times from the morning in the Time Attack sessions in the afternoon. We knew there was a good chance for rain after noon, so I told Mike, lets make these morning laps our best, because if it rains we may not get a second chance. Mike did an awesome job, running consistent mid 1:14 lap times with a best of 1:14.29. The next closest cars (civic Si and S2000’s) I believe were running in the 1:16 – 1:17. Good job Mike! Wooo!

The GT Motoring DC5 RSX ended the day winning the Street class as well as Modified class. The modified class allows additional modifications, as well as R compounds. We ran in Street spec anyway!

Special thanks to Rich Karbowiak for some awesome photos! Only a few are mine =0(

Our next stop: Super Street Super Lap Battle at Road America.

PICS
