DIY Changing the Shift Boot (FG2)
I just purchased a spare shiftboot and cover (that silver trim panel the boot sticks out of) and a JDM DC2 shiftboot (black with red stitching). Once they arrive I will be posting a DIY w/ pics on how to change the boot. I took my boot off to see how it attaches and it shouldn't be hard at all. I'll keep you all posted. When I'm done it should look like El_Ben's.
(keep in mind that this is for the Si) Items needed: (I am at work, I will add the sizes for the tools, later) Zip ties wrench small torx screw driver 1) Loosed the nut below the shift knob. 2) Unscrew the shift knob and nut and put them aside. 3) Push the boot down into the console and grab the inside rim of the silver trim piece and pull up evenly on both sides. It should pop right off. 4) There are 4 torx head screws holding the boot to the silver trim piece. 5) Remove the screws and pull the boot and ring out through the bottom. 6) The boot is secured to the ring with 6 staples. Remove them with a pair of needle nose pliers or anything else that might work. 7) Flip the old boot inside-out and use a pair of cutting pliers or whatever you have to cut the zip tie holding the plastic ring to the boot. (You will need this ring for the new boot) 8) Flip the new boot inside-out and replace the ring with the original ring and secure with a new zip tie. 9) Now depending on the boot you will use, the next part will be different. I used a DC2 Type R shift boot which is quite a bit larger than the Si boot. I pulled the boot throught the silver trim piece and put the ring back in place. I screwed the torx screws right through the boot to hold it in place. 10) Trim off the excess boot material. 11) Snap the silver trim piece back in place in the console. 12) Put the nut back on the shaft (flange side up) 13) Screw the knob back on, making sure to line up the shift pattern. 14) Tighten the nut to secure the knob. That's it. I would have liked to photograph the whole thing but if you follow these directions you will see it is not hard at all. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I like the stock knob so I will not be changing it. But I will show how to remove the knob in the DIY. Everything should be arriving Monday or Tuesday so the pics will be up soon. P.S. The stock shift knob weighs 241 grams if anyone was interested in comparing it to a weighted knob. Last edited by FujiBlueSi; 04-17-2006 at 07:51 AM. |
