DIY Tint Removal

Alright so I got a ticket for speeding, and as he was writing me up for that he decided to also write me up for having my front windows tinted (Cali). So about half way through I thought to mabye do a DIY. I know alot of people probibly know this but just in case some one does not here it goes. This is my first DIY.

First, you need these things, Lacquer thinner, windex, some old rags, and a razor blade.

Next roll the window about 3/4th the way down so you can see where the tint ends on the very top of the window.

Next take the razor blade and peel the top part off. It is best to start on the top left corner. I was not that far over due to I wanted to show a pic of what to do.

Peel the tint off by hand and roll up the window as you pull more and more off until the tint, the the thing that made your car look really good is off.

Next take the Lacquer Thinner drinch the rag in it, and start the pain staking project of getting the glue off the window. As you do this remember each time you apply the Lacquer Thinner to flip the rag or use a new one due to when you apply it the glue sticks to the rag. If you use that side again it will just go right back on the winow. Every now and then use the windex on the areas where the glue has been removed to clean it up a bit. The first time you apply the Lacquer Thinner it will look a little like this.

Eventually you will be done, about an hour or so, a headache from the Lacquer Thinner, and a buch of smelly rags later, your car will look lame like mine with no front tints. By the way my car is really dirty.

Hope this helps some people who might have to do this and dont know how.

Nope not in cali. Here you can tint whatever else you want as dark as you want exept the fronts and the front windshield(you can tint the first 5 inches of the windshield though. It really sucks. The car looks un even and it is bugging the hell out of me.

Yea it sucks cause I was only going 75 or 80(dont know somwhere in there cause my speedo is messed up) and he put me for 85 plus. I just paid the 240 dollar fine today, and still have to pay for traffic school and miss a weekend of work to do it. Ahhhhhhh but I was speeding so whatever.

just use windex to remove the glue. spray it on the window and scrap it off with the razor then wipe the glue off the blade and repeat. thiers no need for thinner.

If it's any consolation, you got off relatively easy, I just spent a grand getting my wife out of her ticket for 94mph. Good lawyer ran $600, and the rest was court fees... No points off her license means our insurance company won't drop us!!!!!!!! yay!!!!!

Yea but the windex wasent working to well for me and the laquer thinner helped, i just wanted to get it done. I still gave a little around the edges to take off. I will just use windex and a razor for that.

Yea I know. My dad said I was really lucky because it could have been alot worse. My fine was 240 and I gotta pay for traffic school. Sucks but hey at least my insurance wont go up. Its already 200 a month, and I dont have an Si yet, and no previous accedents or tickets. But the Si is worth it!

A better option than laquer (I imagine it could damage the plastics in the car) is plain old ammonia. Ammonia desolves the adhesive from tint like nobody's business... that is why "safe for tint" window cleaners do not contain ammonia..

wrong , i live in cali it just depnds on what where who guy cop is , legaly your allowed only 70 % which brings it to a 35 % tint leval , i have a 20 % never get pulled over night or day yet my friend has exact car we have same sound ( l5's) he gets pulled over all the time ( both under age )

on the tint diy alto all you have to do is use steamer and it wont leave resado , and ppl that can use steel wool is better then using blades and scratching glass ....

the easier way to do it, is to heat the tint up with a hair dryer and the glue and tint peels off. less of a mess.
