DIY: Installing Autodimming Homelink Mirror (No A-Pillar)
The following DIY works with any 8th Gen CIVIC that has a moonroof.
My wife loves her new Civic EX sedan but she really misses the homelink capability she had in her Pilot. The Honda Autodimming mirror dealer option does NOT have Homelink capability (guess that would make too much sense). I purchased the Homelink autodimming mirror made by Gentex for LESS than the Honda kit (50-GENK40). Gentex seems to have an exclusive deal with the Johnson Controls folks. You can even get it with map lights an/or a compass/temp. You can also find these on E-Bay pulled from cars with new wire harnesses. Looks legit, but you never know...... Suggested site (no connection with said site. Just a happy customer): www.autodimmingmirrors.com/dealerpricing Tell them you are a RAV4world member (I know, blasphemy. But it saves you some bucks). Tell them this is an "Autoclub" purchase You WILL need the foreign vehicle bracket and wire cover. I wanted to do this install without messing with the A pillar (and the enclosed Air Bag). I figured there had to be the power needed in the maplight/moonroof controller. Use the existing Honda autodimming mirror instructions to remove the maplight/controller module. After the module is removed you will have two wire harnesses. One with a white connector and one with a green connector. The light blue wire on the white connector is +12V Battery. The purple wire with the silver stripe on the green connector is +12V Accessory. Finding that was a real challenge. The accessory line stays high up to 10 minutes after the ignition is turned off or until the door opens. The wire harness for the mirror: White striped wire is +12V accessory The middle wire is Grnd The black wire is +12V Battery. The attached picture shows the wires before soldering: After soldering everything, tape everything up good with electrical tape. I used one of the mounting bolts on the map light for the ground. I got the auto mirror that does not have homelink, nor compass, nor any lights. Nothing fancy, just the auto mirror. That one just has two wires, + and ground.
Simple enough installation, except the wire shown in dhouse's DIY is a different color on the 06 SI. Mine was a green wire with a silver stripe. It is in the same location as the one shown in dhouse's picture above. Looking at the non clip side of the green connector, it is the 4th wire from the right. http://static.flickr.com/109/2909027...cdaf04.jpg?v=0 dhouse, I hope you don't mind that I used your picture. Hope this helps. |

No, I did not take any pictures - left my camera at work, and just couldn't wait.
It really was a simple install, all in all, took about 1 hour - but that is because I connected to the wrong wire the first time. As soon as I figured out which was the correct accessory wire it was simple. I could probably do it again in 30 minutes - but 20 of those minutes would be locating my tools... |

With the mirror adjusted, you cannot see the mount to the window or the wire coming out of the wire cover. As far as the wire cover - order the short one. I ordered the long one, which is about 1/2 inch too long, so I will have to shave a bit off. It is plastic so not a big deal.
If anyone is planning on doing this, I will be happy to help. If anyone wants to do this, order the shorter wire cover. I had to Dremmel off about a 1/2" from the long one. All in all, it was a piece of cake. REAL happy that I can toss that clunky gararge door opener in the trash. Thanks for the info... Bill. |
