Talking DIY: Remove Spare Tire and save a little weight

LOL - pay attention and you will see ...

1. First open the trunk of the car.

Lift up the floor cover, unscrew the bolt, lift out the spare.

Here is where I did my little mod. I got some square aluminum pipe. Cut it to fit into the well. Joined it using L brackets and metal screws (I don't know how to weld). Placed into the wheel well and pushed into the sound deadener.

I bought some foam (closed cell) and cut spots for the wrench and jack. I also have the ContiComfort kit. It is the orange box above. I stuck it to the carpet floor. It will fill most minor holes in tires. I also have a tool kit, med kit and extra oil in the trunk. Quick and easy, only sliced one finger with the hack saw. I may redo it some time later, but it's not back for less than an hours work.

i dunno...but i believe too much in karma to drive around without a spare to save a couple pounds on the car. Id sooner diet or take a good healthy dump before i hit the road to lighten up the car if i had too.

Im speaking purely as someone whos changed many of tires on the side of busy NY highways....but at least you can listen to primo tunes as you wait for the tow truck truck to arrive LOL

I got a flat today, but had a plug kit in the trunk next to my spare and fixed it in the parking lot. If it doesn't hold, I'll need that spare. One of my coworkers had an electric pump which I should get to add a few more pounds of convienece to my trunk. Anyone recommend a pump they've had success with?

i had one for a long time....i got it at one of those Liquidator stores, forget the brand it was just a generic one....plugs in to the cig lighter....damn thing was LOUD but worked real well. Dont expect it to pump as fast as a gas station pump would but ill tell you they are worth EVERY penny!

When i traded in my last civic i left the thing in the trunk like a dumb-ass with my jumper cables....i have to get a new set.

I never understood "saving weight" by getting rid of essential items for a everyday car. You can drive around on 1/4 of a tank all the time and save a few pounds i guess.

it makes sense for horse racing when you have a 250 lb jockey vs. an 85 lb one....but this makes me laugh a lil.

LOL, I have two spares. One at my parents and another at a storage locker. If it happens, it happens. Knock on wood baby!! Actually I've lost 10 pounds over the last two months, so it helps ...

Check out the ContiComfort kit, it's a sealant and pump all in one. http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/...tkit/index.jsp

I like fa1's response, but I have my Sigs for protection ;-)

I kept them so if I end up needing to jack it, I have it at hand. That way when I have someone bring the spare (if God forbid) I can do a quick swap.
