I just started reading this and I'm on the PDF now. This is awesome!! I'm trying to understand however, the sewing the panels in Figure 4-4 and 4-5. Are these little panels, each piece from side to side. So in fig. 4-4 these are the two bottom pieces correct? So those get sewn together leaving some extra on the end, then the "dog" piece gets sewn onto those ends? I'm sure I'm not explaining this correctly. Hmmmm, is anyone following me? I'm very interested in doing this and it's laid out so well in the PDF, that's just simply genius!
Did you just do the centers or did you do the entire seats? did I miss that somewhere? |

Figure 4-4 and 4-5 show the bottom panels, but it's just to illustrate tracing the original panels and suggested sewing order, so it applies to all panels on all the seats.
It's a bit easier to sew the panels together first, and then run another line of stitching over top of it to sew the "dog bar" back on. I hope that makes sense ![]() I only did the seat centers... all the black areas you see in the finished pictures is the original material. RedFrost did his differently in that he also replaced the forward-most panel on the seat bottoms. Also, thanks for comments on the DIY.... knowing people appreciate it makes all the hours I put into it worthwhile!

Well it's definitely something I'm pricing out and looking at doing at this very moment. I'm doing a huge car auido build right now, so this will most likely be the last thing that gets done, but it's for sure going to get done. Can you tell me a couple of things? 1) What kind of foam did you use for that? Is that just closed cell foam? 2) What did it cost you to do what you did? I'm actually looking to do all of my seats completely for a couple of reasons. First is I'm putting, or have put in and am re installing, 7" video monitors in my headrests. They look bad and I found a different application but I'm going to have to re do the fabric on my headrests. Number two is I don't like the way the seats look and if I can do this without wasting a ton of material, then it's gonna costa hell of a lot less than the Katskinz application. More work but way less! I guess the only other question I have is, how much material did you use for yours? You did the doors and the seat mids. I'm looking at 2 colors and I was estimating about 5 yards each color. Am I over shooting or is that about right? Here's what i"m doing. Lower doors, because I'm building pods to go in there (long story). Dark Grey Middle doors will be light grey. Thinking about Dark Grey too, simply for dirt factor. Arms dirty, dark color, good, light color bad! Handles will be light grey as well. I'm doing the A pillars because of speaker pods. Dark Grey Seat outlines and head rests will be Dark Grey Seat middles will be light grey. Center console will be Dark Grey. Center console in rear seat will be Dark Grey as well. Rear Pillar trims, again for speaker pods, Dark Grey Also doing a rear deck rack for components, tray removed, this will be Dark Grey. I think that's about it. What do you think? |

My only concern would be actually getting the material to conform to the shape of the doors. The material would have to be very stretchy and you would have to find a glue with a very high initial tack to be able to grab the material and hold it. Five yards should do it though.
I did a 3-way speaker setup in my doors that seems similar to what you're planning. I'll post pics later (at work right now). I originally wanted to do material on the bottom, but couldn't find something that was stretchy enough, besides spandex. I don't need to explain why I didn't do that So I opted for a textured black paint that actually looks very OEM. I was happy with how the paint turned out, though I think I could have done a better job with the fiberglass.

That's a thought as well. I'm actually looking at re forming the entire bottom of the door to take away all those contours and shapes. But the texture is a definite way to go.
I'm very interested in pictures. I'm always looking for ideas. Do you have to post them or are they on here somewhere? |
