DIY: Removing the R18 shift knob (MT)

First locate the silver ring that connects the top of the shift boot to the botom of the stock knob.

The ring is secured to the knob with two clips. Gently pull the ring down (away from the knob) to unclip it. Once the ring is unclipped, simply unscrew the knob by turning it counter clockwise (lefty loosey).

One thing to note when installing an aftermarket shift knob. There is no longer anything securing the top of the boot (unless you by a knob that clips into the ring), so the boot will sag a little.

I hope this is helpful.

one thing you can do to keep the top of the boot from sagging down is to put rubberband. first you take your knob and boot off. put the rubberband and let it loop 4-5 times about half an inch under the thread. this'll definitely keep the boot from sagging, while partially keep dust from entering your transmission assembly.

My grandfather always shared his wisdom with me... this one seems appropriate for now.

found a shift knob that doesnt sag the boot!!! there at advance auto. its a silverish-gold knob, 15 bucks, and looks really good, it had a screw bottom and luckly with a little "A** into it" you can screw the knob into the top of the plastic clip ontop of the boot. just push and screw and it stays great! plus its alot smaller than the OEM shifter (my preference) ill put a pic on here too, its dark but u can get the idea of what it looks like.

Did this too, I ended up just taking the silver wrong off from the stock boot.

Fastened it to the shifter under the knob with a zip tie. The silver thing would move around and make clicking noises etc

This is my current shifter.

I just got a blue stitched boot from strutking and used their boot adapter to hold it up.
