Finally, an Injen CAI for my JDM R18 Civic

This probably made me the number 1 or 2 in Singapore having the Injen CAI...

Ok, the packages finally arrived.

Damned! Why are they of different sizes? The larger one is SP1569BLK and the smaller one is SP1569P. Both are exactly the same: BLK for black powder-coated and P for polished. I ordered the BLK while my buddy ordered the P.

The packages reveal....... intake goodness!

The daunting task of removing the #$$@ airbox. Why does it have to be that hard?

Reconnecting the coolant tubes... fortunately the tube supplied by Injen was big enough. My pal has to buy a bigger one cos the one supplied was too small.

Test-fitting the tube is such a *****! It does not line up properly at first but with some twist and turn, it lined up pretty ok.

Dang! Getting the upper and lower tubes connected is also a *****!

This where the cone is.

To top it off, this is how it looks in my engine compartment.

Now, the field report....

Moving off
If I say there is no low end loss, you probably won't believe me simply because this is an open pod and who am I kidding, right? Though unlike the stock airbox, which is designed to "hold" a reasonable amount of air for immediate combustion for the fantastic low end torque, the Injen CAI did not fare too badly. Although I feel a short hesitation from start, the intake delivers air very consistently and with force! I think this is where the "MR" or "mega ram" technology comes in. The narrowing of the intake pipe at the MAF sensor location creates a venturi effect, speeding air up as it passes through that narrow portion and into the intake manifold. So when you would normally expect a "gasping for air" situation, the engine recovers very quickly from the low end loss.

Mid to high
As I forcefully depressed my accelerator up to 4,500 rpm, the engine let go an angry growl and went "waah........". But at this point, the engine is quite loud! I am not bluffing so for those who may have a difficult time with "whoever", better think twice! I tried to reduce as much time at this point as possible by holding on to the pedal and as it reached 5,500 rpm, the engine changed its tune to a long "wongg.......". MR at play again? This is when the auto gears will change and it did so at around 6,000 rpm.

Ok, this is where I need you to help me understand, if you can explain. There is an alternate way to accelerate and this is what I did;
- Stepped on pedal until the mid-end "waah" came on (around 4,500)
- Let go and let the gear down-shift (around 3,500)
- Stepped hard on the pedal and this third sound came on and it went "woo........" up to 6,000 rpm!

I suspect I was deliberately "aborting" the up-shift and forced the gear to down-shift thus engaging a lower gear at a quicker time and using the lower gear (probably 3rd gear) to accelerate. This behaviour appeared to be quite similar to using paddle-shifts to control the gears.

One thing I must say is that I absolutely love the paddle-shifts! YES, WE GET PADDLE SHIFTS IN SINGAPORE! Reason being it allowed me to do a quick slow-down whenever idiotic drivers, especially those idiots driving tour buses, do a "slow" overtake and cut into my path whenever they felt like it. Of course without signalling! :x On the accelearation side, I was able to hold gear up to redline before up-shifting and that helped a lot to overtake.

Oh, I must add that during cruise at around 2,500 rpm, the car is absolutely quiet!

Overall, I must say that acceleration is much easier and the car simply feels "lighter". It looked like I have really "tortured" my car this time.

Oh yes, NO CEL

So i got polished instead.

Congrats on the install, don't you love it when your stopped and you quickly and lightly press the gas, you can hear the intake suck in the air.
