Angry "Easy" Removal for headlight/tailight smoked out tint?

Hmm.... I bought a civic the other day, and it has about 50-60% smoked out tint on the tailights I would say... so at night time the tailights are very dim. So, last night I was driving home and a Arizona highway patrolman pulled me over for just that reason, and said I was in violation of the law :s...

He said that it's ok to have a tint as dark as you want during the day, but at night you need to "take them off"... obviously that's impossible for me to do without wasting a crap load of money, because they are tints~ not covers, at any rate.... I just need some advice on ANYTHING to use to take it off without damaging the actual plastic tailights... ANYTHING...

Really a bummer, because I really thought they were awesome, and I was planning on painting the car black already, so I was just going to get some pre-cut tints for the front to make it all look good... out the window now... I'm sure I could get a lighter tint and it would be ok, but meh, honestly I just want to take this off and be done with it for now, any advice would be appriciated greatly!

how are they tinted? the spray on tints can be removed with a bit of elbow grease and paint thinner or some other similar chemicals. i used goof-off.
film tints im not too sure but i think you can just do those with a blowdryer, razor blade, and goo-gone for the sticky stuff. thats how i took off my front tints when i got busted

hope this helps

Sweet... Well, I just got it, and I've never personally done it, so I couldn't say wether it's spray on or film. I will try both and see which I have more luck with... Thanks for the help^^.

That doesnt make sense. It should be harder to tell that there are tints during the night. Since it's darker outside, it should appear brighter than it wuold during the day.

spray ons tend to have that dull, flat possibly grainy (depending on the paint job) look while the films are smooth and glossy

You should try getting LED replacement bulbs. They are brighter than stock bulbs, there-by offsetting the tint.

Meh, I don't know. The officer was deffinatly correct in saying what he had to say, I checked it out while he was explaining it to me, but like some of the other posters said, there are variations that could have effect on the lighting.

Also, the cops out here are the kind of cops that pull you over out of randomness just to see wtf you're doing >.> idk man... One night I got pulled over for making a turn when the GREEN ARROW was light~ SO... yeah........... (he said I turned on red. I told him that about after 10 seconds it turned green arrow, and he said "woops, sorry about that".... >.>lol?
